Hello-

I am considering purchasing a New Holland 273 Square Baler, and am unsure of the baler"s width. I"ve seen 273"s with either one or two tires on the driver"s side of the baler. Does any one know the width of a 273 with two tires on the driver"s side or one tire on the driver"s side? Thank you!

Ryan: Can't tell you specifically about the 273, however my S-69 was a shade over 100" outside the tires. I think that is somewhat standard in the industry. I moved 5 balers for a dealer once, on a 100" wide trailer, mix of MF and NH. The only ones that hung over edge of trailer more than couple inches were the ones with flotation tires. I can't remember the model numbers. We loaded them with a big loader over the side, 3 of them on backwards, two of them forward.

My 273"s manual says that the over all width of the 273 with standard tires is 8 ft 4 5/8". With flotation tires it is 8 ft 8 1/8". I didn"t go out and measure mine, I just looked in the manual to get the spec"s there.

E.B.

One other quick question for you, if you have time. What is the approx weight of the 273 baler? I am considering purchasing a 273 that is 2 hours away. If I was to purchase it, how would you recommend getting it back home? It looks to be too wide for most trailers, so the only other option would be towing, right? Based on your experience with that baler, how well would that work? Thank you!

Sorry, I had to work this weekend, so I haven"t been on line much. The weight varies from the tongue length (hitch) that the baler has. The short tongue-which I have-is 2577lbs for the twine version. The long tongue PTO twine is 2675lbs. There are other versions listed that weigh in at 2977lbs in the manual specs. The only way I would consider trailering is on a low boy type trailer, my baler seems to wide for most conventional trailers. I"d do like others have suggested, and tow it. ONE word of advice-bolt, tie, or somehow make sure the pick up is in the up/transport position & secured. The manual shows a pin that holds the the transport strap in place in the transport notch. My baler is missing that pin, and the pick up will drop like a rock when a bump is hit. Secure that transport latch before hitting the road, or a damaged pickup/bent teeth could happen. I have had good luck with my baler. I try to check back more frequently.

I don't see why you couldn't tow it. I tow a Ford 532 around with my Ranger when needed and have no trouble. Just check the wheel bearings first and carry a spare on a long haul.

Thank you for the information! What do you mean by flotation tires? Is that when there are two tires on the "drivers" side of the baler? Thanks again!

Older balers often had a dual wheel option for the left side- the heavier side. Same size tire, but the wheel was offset, ie, had a wider attaching area. Floatation tires came along a couple decades later- simply wider., like 11L-15, etc.
