Most of the Southeastern USA is still dry. Coming off a drought and the prospects of more drought this summer will put hay prices at even more of a premium for this year. With the fuel prices increasing transportation of hay is getting very expensive. Increased fertilizer cost and fuel cost has pushed production cost to $30-40 a bale. Look for the minimum price for 5 x4 bales to be $50-60 a bale and that is cheap. If that 5 x 4 bale weights' 1000 Lbs. the you are looking at $100-120 a ton for fescue. Orchard grass hay should sell for $150-180 a ton now and more later in the season. Alfalfa start to sell for $250 ton because of dairy and horse operators creating increased demand. Now that we have $6 corn you can not afford corn to feed to livestock for the production of meat. Just hope you are close to an ethanol plant so you can feed corn by-products.
If you use hay in the Southeast you had better be cutting and baling anything you can. There will be even more hay shortages in the southeast this year that last year. The first cutting is yielding in the range of 50-60% of a normal year.

I still have about 200 small square bales of tifton 44 bermuda from the last cut in the barn in central arkansas. Need to move it,gonna cut new crop soon. Come get it 3.50 per bale. E mail me your phone no. or just E mail me.

Out here in CA hay is high. Most old crop hay went out. New crop hay is selling for $220 per ton. I have some oat hay to cut but it won't be ready till June. We will have to sell some cows.

very little hay left in western colorado or eastern utah, what there is will bring 125 to 175 per ton in any type bale. lot of cow outfits are still feeding due to cold weather. I did turn one bunch out yesterday, but will feed my others for a few more days, hoping for 70deg + weather. currently it is raining may turn to snow late tonite.

Here in upstate NY around my house most barns are completly empty. A lot went to NC and Georgia. Not sure what this summer will bring but I am raising our price per 45-50 pound bale 50 cents because of fuel and parts price increases as well as our property tax increase. I just hope to get good enough weather to put in some real nice hay.

No old crop hay left in Northern MO, lots of hay ground be sprayed and killed. Potash for Alfalfa ground will cost $140 or more per acre. Not good for end user or producer.

Not sure where youre getting the climate predictions but Im seeing the SE (at least TN) is in good shape. We're only a bit short right now w/ good soil moisture. OTOH, I take the higher prices for my hay. :)

Many of the TVA lakes are many feet below normal levels for this time of the year. These lakes should have a surplus this time of the year and TVA should be generating power but the ground water is just not available.

No shortage of hay in my area. local papers full of adds. I am all sold out basically and will start cutting next week is goal. Biggest thing in my area is dealing with customers actually pay. Nothing anymore can be let go in advance or even booked without cash up front. That has really changed in business area here.

I've been sirprised how much hay is still for sale when a year ago it was almost impossible to get and there was a lot less hay put up this year. The only thing I can figure is that either alot of animals got sold or there wasn't as much hay shipped out of the area this year.

Only reason hay would be short supply up here in the north is because it will be under water. Getting tired of the rain, no planting going on. Just rain. And pretty cold yet. Things have not greened up very much, only the very good cold season stuff is moving.

12 hours to the north and I am seeing a lot of last years hay for sale right now, small sqaures $3-$4 bale, 2nd cutting too, that drought is really putting a hurting on people in those areas.
