Gehl manure spreader?

We have an option to barter with a guy we sold oats to, and in return we might buy or trade a gehl spreader for the oats. Looks to be in decent shape except the beater is missing 5 paddels and they're welded on so you can't just replace the paddles.

Anyone have any experience with them? We already priced a new beater- $1750!!!!

I think it's a 270 bu. model but I'm not sure. It's a little bit longer than our 235 bu. H&S model. Apron looks to be in decent shape.

He said he want's $800 for it, but I'm wondering if that's a fair price when you factor in the beater as well.

I know from your previous post over a few years that you are capable of repairing that beater, just clean it up real good and then just get some flat steel the same thickness as the beaters, then take a piece of cardboard and trace a good beater and use that to cut a replacement and weld it on. As far as checking balance just take drive chain and rotate and see if you have a heavy spot that always wants to settle to the bottom, if so just put a bit more weld someplace on the opposide. When I get around to repairing some old and I am talking 1930's New Ideas that is the way I am planing to do it. They were made as replaceable on a cast bracket but after 60+ years you would never get things off the shaft.

I might be able to fix it, but I'd probably have to send out the work to make the paddles. They've got some bends in them and all that.

The beater also isn't driven like most are. It's actually driven direct off the gear box, which is coupled to a shaft with a type of shifter like on a forage box. The shaft that drives the beater is splined and it slides into the beater on one end, and on the other the beater has a shaft that rides on a bearing.

Have you tried any of the scrap yards? They might have a beater. Wisconsin Tractor Parts east of Green Bay or Downing Tractor Parts over in western WI?

We planned on rying them, but normally spreader skip the junk yard and go straight to the scrap pile. Always rusted out & useless by the time they get them.

As high as oats are, it wouldn'take too many bu to get to $800.

Maybe you could remove a few paddles to keep the shaft in balance rather than adding paddles or spending $1750 for a new shaft and paddles. Of course that depends on what you are gong to do with the manure...if you are going to make a pile, fewer paddles probably wouldn't matter.

Yeah, dad sold the oats $6/bu. cleaned & bagged + $0.50/bu. delivery. We're hoping to try talking him down a little more on the spreader, but I'm gonna leave the talking to dad- I'm just the mechanic that looks over potential buys most of the time....

Take the beater out, take it to HOOVER REPAIR in
Curtiss Wi, and He will build you a new beater or paddles whatever you want.

Try contacting Gehl's parts department and see if they will sell just the paddles. As I am sure you know they are located nearby in West Bend. If you do this it might not be a bad idea to have the drum balanced afterwards(if it is not too expensive). I heard stories of badly unbalanced beaters causing the tires on an empty spreader to lift off the ground.

I highly doubt they would- they're welded on and the beater is sold as 1 peice with the paddles welded.

If you happen to have any local reputable machine fabrication shops anywhere near you I would get them to give you a quote to build one.Also even though the paddel's are welded,they should be able to be removed either by grinding or a tortch.The beater is most likely just a piece of pipe or if you're lucky a shaft,most likely pipe,with a piece of shaft on each end and keyed for a sprocket.It shouldn't need to cost you over 1700 to fix it.If it is missing the paddel's completely,can you have new one's made and just weld the new one's on?
