I have a 65hp (55hp PTO) tractor that I have used to pull a haybine. I am thinking about upgrading to a NH 1411- I know the recommended horsepower is 80, but could I get away with pulling it with my tractor?

I'm not familiar with NH equipment so I'm not sure how wide a 1411 is, but we use a 85 HP tractor to pull a 14' Hesston 1014+2 Hydra-swing. I wouldn't want to go any smaller than that on that machine.

We do use our 105 HP Oliver 1855 on it as well when I want to get my head out form under the sun and that runs it great.

I tried out a used 1412 (the impeller version of the 1411) last year to replace our old NH 488 haybine. I put it on our Ford 5000 (about 65 to 70 horse) and it would run it, but it worked it like crazy. I couldn't mow any faster than I did with the 488 and what little I used it (not even 2 acres) almost overheated the engine.

I would say 80 hp would be the bare minimum to run a 1411. More hp might be needed if you are working in field with a lot of hills.

We ended up getting a used CaseIH 3309 (same thing as a New Idea 5209) and the Ford 5000 runs it nice. It works it a little harder, but that is partly because I picked up two gears (running about 3 mph faster than I did with the 488). I think the 3309 is a good mower, but make sure whatever discbine you might buy is not completely worn out. They get pretty expensive to fix if the cutterbar is shot.

A friend puts up about 60,000 bales a year and has 2 discbines. He says 10 HP per foot of cut. So a 10' cut discbine would take a 100 to mow through anything in its way.

I know you'll get lot's of feedback on this one so here's my two cents. I tried out a JD 1350 disc mower conditioner last year with my 65HP John Deere. The mower is 8'2" and and it was OK in short second cut hay. I think in thick hay it would have been a little to much for that tractor. The 1411 discbine is a 10'4" machine and it would probably break something in a 55HP tractor. Until you mow a lot of hay with a disc mower conditioner, it's hard to believe just how much power they require. If the book say's 80, I'd run it with 80 or more.

Dad has a JD 2550 pulling a NH 408 which is an 8 foot version of a NH 411 discbine. There are times when the NH 408 will bring that tractor to it's knees.

I'm running a NH 1412, the impeller version of the 1411 with a Deere 4040 (90 hp). Most of the time it handles it fine. There are a few fields though where it makes that 4040 snort. NH makes a tough machine, but they do like power.

To be honest, I think you have a snowball's chance in hell to pull that thing, especially in heavy hay. I think you might be better off with a disc mower tedder combo. Going to be much easier on your tractor. Otherwise, you need the 80 horse to pull it. 100 preferably. Just My Thoughts.

Not a hope in blazes. Get a tractor or get a haybine, but you won't run that discbine with what you have.
You might get it up to speed while sitting in the yard, but it takes a lot more power to run a crop through it, and that much more again to make any speed. NH is awful optimistic with their 80 hp recomendation. That's a 10'4" mower. That's 100 PTO hp material here.

Pardon my ignorance, but is a 1411 a discbine?? If it is, I think you are going to need a little more steam. If not, I know the factory often tells you a horsepower level that seems high. They do this because the newer tractors are not built as heavy as the older ones. An example would be a Case 770, is only 55-60 hp, but is a very heavy tractor for its size. I have seen several people pull a hydroswing with an M Farmall. Worked just fine, really. After having said all that, if it is not a discbine,I think you will be just fine. This is my opinion ofcourse.

Ever think about a New Idea (red version) 5209? Don't know from experience but have heard they use a lot less power to run them. 1411, absolutely no way would I pull it with that tractor, 411 would give you a workout
