Rake wars: JD 640 vs NH 256

Not a war really but I need a ground drive bar rake and I have a choice between the Deere 640 with dolly wheel and a NH 256 without in about the same shape for roughly the same price. the deere looks like an older model than the 256 and I"ve been told it is lighter but I hear good things about dolly wheels . Anyone want to weigh in with any thoughts on the two?

My mentor told me 5 bar rake is much better than any 4 bar rake. I purchase an old NH 256 rake at auction for $750 a few years ago. Works great.

The JD 640 also can be "configured" with 5 bars instead of 4.

Bought 2 640s about two years ago for $700.

Completly rebuilt one rake that is pictured below and used it last year.

The rake is extremely quiet and the dolly wheel makes it very easy for two people to manuever.

stay away from deere 894 rakes.

I'd prefer hollands, but the 640 is good with that dolly.

I have a 640 and think it works great. The 640 is a 4 bar rake the 256 is 5, but performance wise I haven`t really noticed a difference.

Around here I looked for quite a while for a decent priced rake. I think I paid around 700 for the 640. The 256`s were going for 1500 up on auctions and lots. So if this holds true for you they`re either high on the 640 or low on the 256.

The dolly wheel is fine but not a must have for me. Nicer for hooking and unhooking, I normally rake with a narrow front tractor so the dolly wheel really doesn`t affect anything.

I think both rakes are pretty similar as far as the dog setups on the wheels and cost of parts..

If ya made me pick one, and they were in identical shape, I`d go with the 256.
