Just purchased JD 290 Two-row planter with 5 sets of plates for $200 in good working condition including fert. and inc. boxes. Questions: On average how much (pounds per acre) corn seed will I need per acre? Will sweet corn take more or less pounds per acre? Where can I find information on the plates?
What range of harvest quanities (bushels/acre) should I expect?

Need to start planting soon, so a timely response is desired. Thanks for any information on this equipment.

Chris, last month I bought a 40 lb bag at a MFA dealer for 38 bucks-that's the cheapest he had since it's only for deer/wildlife. My book and experience last year told me it takes about 8 lbs of seed per acre minimum but that depends on row spacing and your index plates. We use 12-12-12 fertilizer at about $6 each 50lb bag and get maybe 1 acre per bag. Don't know about sweet corn. Last time we tried it, the neighbors cattle torn down the fence to get to it. They didn't even touch the horse corn, so as far as I can see, you're goint to have lots of wild company when it starts getting ripe!

Rust covered metal plates are; H694B H695B H697B and H1302B. Plastic plates found on planter are labeled B1. Also have plastic set of B2-24 plates.
I will be purchasing field corn seed for ~9-10 acres of rocky and hilly 100' wide strips (~2 acres each) Corn may or may not be harvested (many deer, turkey and other beast). Field is next to state park.
In the bottom flat land I will be planting 2-4 acres of sweet corn. Most likely not a hybrid breed but an older standard variety. Approximately how much field corn seed will I need if I purchase the cheapest standard variety?

We farmers in the midwest plant about 24,000 to 32,000 seeds per acre of field corn. Without fertilizer we would probably plant 19,000 seeds per acre, you might want to aim for that for food plots? We buy corn by the 80,000 seeds per bagful, they don't sell by the lb any more here.

Different variaties have different ideal planting rates, but within those above limits work fine.

I have purchased three bags (55lbs/each) of Golden Harvest H2387 which is Large Round seed. The bag chart for ROUNDS indicates for JD16 plates are B0:2044 B1:1933 B150:1933 B2:2043 B25:2295 The next row for JD24 is B0:2712 B1:10853 B150:10853 B2:2824 B25:16238

The plates I have are all listed in the FLATS table not the ROUNDS table. Should I take the bags back? Or should I be running down to the JD dealer for a new plate?

One or the other. :) If you can still find corn sold in 55 lb (56 in a bushel???) bags, be aware there are a LOT more kernals in a bag of flats than in a bag of large rounds. If memory serves from 15 years ago, a 38lb bag of flats often had more kernals in it that a 56 lb bag of large rounds. The flats will probably cost more, but you should get the same number of seeds per dollar.

This doesn't mean much as the planter plates will seed it to what ever rate you set it, but if you plant a bag of each, your brain starts going crazy trying to figure out why the seed is going so fast when you switch to large rounds. It's not the volume, but the number of kernals that counts. :)

Corn dealer may have the plates you need. If not, trade those rounds for flats.

Chris you will need to check with a local ag extension to get an idea on how much seed you should populate per acre in your area. The planter itself has nothing to do with how much you put down. Sorry I cannot help you on the plates and which one would have you plant the correct amount per acre.
