New Holland 1431 Discbine PTO..Help!!

Ok here we go...I just had 1431 delivered, and when I went to hook it up, NO DICE. The 1000 rpm shaft on my tractor is 1 3/8" and the PTO on the mower is 1 3/4". Does anyone know if there is an adapter or can I change the universal to a smaller size? I am wondering if I get a new/used PTO shaft for the mower, the splines on the new one won't match the existing splines on the mower, any help is appreciated

I'm not gonna bill you; because you aren't going to like what I tell you. You can use an adapter, but it is a bad idea for several reasons. You really need to either buy the correct 1-3/8 21 yoke at nearly $700 and hope you don't ruin the spider ($200) making the swap, or fit your tractor wth a 1-3/4 20 spline shaft. As I haven't a clue what tractor you have, that may or may not be a good option. Maybe a used front half-shaft could be found, but I don't know where, and I would not buy a used CV driveline without seeing it first. A new half shaft will spoil $1500 and if you go the bolt on adapter route, sooner or later you will be buying the half shaft (at least).

it's a JD 4250 MFWD, but you are saying that I can't change the PTO shaft on the mower itself?

Yes, you can swap out the just the front yoke on the CV to the correct 1-3/8" 21 spline deal for $700 for the yoke and $200 for the cross kit if you need it. Or a complete half shaft with the 1-3/8 yoke for nearly 1500. CV parts ain't cheap. You should see if Mother Deere offers a 1-3/4" 20 spline PTO output shaft for the 4250; that may be cheaper.

I am going to look at that on monday as an option, I am also looking into this site right now, www.hubcity.com I am looking into their new over-run PTO adapters. Anything ever easy? lol Anyways the baler.....whole other story, but I am getting there, lots of adjustments

I'm gonna jump in here and give you some.... advice. CLEAR the ideas of adapters out of your head before it costs you 2500 bucks or a casket. 1000 drive lines don't like the play that those things add, or the length that they add. The fact that it has a 1-3/4 shaft on the mower now suggests a class VI drive line which wants some major power.
A 540 shaft will get by with the little bit of shake that the adapter will cause. 1000 WILL fly to pieces. If you're lucky it'll just sit there and spin on the hitch like mine did. If you're not lucky it'll whip out and clean the hoses off on it's way to the drawbar where it'll finish the shaft off and snap the stub on the tractor... if you're lucky and still alive.
Get the big stub for your tractor if it's available. Cheaper, safer and easier to deal with.

I am finding the stub isn't available, but am trying to find the a new yoke for the mower instead. Either way I am beat. I never even thought to check it when I bought it. So you speak from experience?

I speak from observing and repairing the experience of others. Sounds like Rod has been there himself. The guy over on NAT that mentions the drawbar extension is correct as well. You need to get 24" from the end of the tractor's PTO shaft to the center of the tractor drawbar hitch pin hole. Whether by the drawbar extension or however.

What I did was replace a Weasler ball slip shaft on a Deere harvester with a Bondolini shaft. At it's 36" length for the equal angle hitch, a cross grenaded before it made one trip around the field. I ended up disposing of the equal angle hitch and shortening the shaft down by close to a foot to get the slop out of it, and it's just touchy about how tight a turn you can make without the equal angle hitch.... or the shaft could bind.
I was running from the 1500 buck boogeyman too. That's why I went with the Bondolini shaft... It's working now, but now as it should and at a price near what the ball slip shaft from Deere would have cost. Sometimes you win, sometimes not...
