Has anyone planted buckwheat with a grain drill? If so can you tell me what other grain the seed would compare to in size. I know how many pounds per acre I want but my seed chart doesnt list buckwheat. I have an IH model 510 13 hole planter. Thanks

Thanks for the replies.planter list most every crop except buckwheat. I measured a half acre plot to use as a test plot. Will set Between wheat and barley and see how much seed I use. Thanks again Dan

Just looking at my drill manual, it is a McCormick Model MF and for buckwheat it is listed in same colum as these others, Wheat, Barly, Buckwheat, Kafir Corn (What ever that is, I do not know), Rye, Flax and Hemp. So you should be able to just use the setting for wheat, barly and rye.

DWarack: I just seeded some buckwheat, go for a setting between wheat and barley. I should be able to tell you in a couple of days whether I got it right. It's been 7 days and I'm in quite dry sand loam, but we go some rain here today. I expect I'll see buckwheat by Sun.

The most satisfactory method of sowing buckwheat is with a grain drill that plants the seed one to two inches deep. Poor stands are likely when seedings are more than two inches deep.

A seeding rate of 36 to 72 pounds per acre or 16 seeds per square foot of clean, viable seed is sufficient. At least 48 pounds per acre should be used of large-seeded varieties such as Pennquad.

What other seeds does your grain chart list?
