Following great advice from on this forum, I got the nut off the back set of discs WITHOUT a drop of blood or even swearing -( A MAJOR FEAT!! )-

So I'm off to buy new bearings for it, but realized I might as well try and solve another problem while its apart.

This is an old Cockshutt set, and it leaves quite a large mound of earth at the center. The back discs are just way too close, only 14' apart and these are 18' discs! My smaller Massey disc set with smaller discs, has about 18' spacing.

So, what do you think would be a solution? Either take one disc and leave it off the rear left side, but maybe the earth would still come out uneven with the right side still on?

Other option, I could bring the two inside rear discs to weld shop and get him to cut them down in size maybe 2' so they don't throw as much earth. This option means taking the right side apart however.....

Is there a proper ratio, of disc size to spacing at the rear to follow?

Oh, and just for what it is worth? Cultivators, discs and plows don't come in "sets". Never did, never will.

Discs have to be adjusted for any given operating speed.

If you're ridgin', pull the rears out of the ground a little.

If it is not covering correctly, pull the fronts out and lower the rears to dig in more and throw more dirt.

My discs are 18" and have more than 18 inches between rear inside discs. Rear gang angles set once notch less aggressive than front doesn't leave a hill. Level before discing. I shorten the top link lifting the rear discs off the ground before transporting then have to lengthen it to make level before discing.

Try reducing rear angle first and widen rear spacing if needed.

I dont think that is the disks fault or how it is spaced or designed. You dont have something set correctly. Sounds like you are holding the front gang partly out of the ground, or the angles are set wrong. I would not butcher the disk to "cure" adjustment problems. Tom

Several things can cause that; too much angle in back gangs..... .compared to front; not balanced front to rear (rear cutting too deep), plow that kicks balk (undisturbed part left between front gangs) missing, etc. ( If it'a a small disc, it may not have this). Is there a farmer around there that you could get to look at it..... ..in the field?

I have the angle in rear low, but I see the problem now its exactly what you guys replied with, front to rear is way off. Rear diggin' in way more.

Problem is the "handle" to adjust the front to back is seized up nice and good. Will have to work on that now.

Thanks guys!

Thurlow, I have to vote for your answer 120%, most likely the front is set way to shallow. The disc is designed to work, even tho some better than others, I'm with everone else don't butcher the disc. Change the adjustment, either the angle of the gangs or the depth front to back. We often forget that on this used equip. the odds are in our favor the previous owner had it adjusted pretty close.
