Would you know if a knotter from a IH 46 can be used in a IH 45. We have tried for the last 4 years to get our IH 45 to get a successful baling but the knotters will not work on a constant basis. This is very frustrating. We can't find anyone that know enough to fix it.. the guy we had out was about 25 and didn't help much. We don't want another summer of round bales. Can someone advise us if we can get our hands on parts from a IH 46 if they will work in our IH 45.

The IH (McCormick) 45 baler was the first baler I ever ran. My father purchased it used around 1970 or so, and I have rode that baler hours on end tying missed knots sitting on the left side twine box. Most anyone who has used or owned one will tell you it is one of the (if not the worst) balers ever built. Not trying to discourage you, and we used it for several years, but it was never reliable, and basically took two people to run (the second to tie missed bales riding on the twine box). The last I knew it was still sitting where I left it when I sold the place unless someone has sold it for scrap by now. If you can get it to tie 8 out of 10 bales you will probably not do much better since we never achieved baling 100 bales without some missed bales, usually on the left side if memory serves me correctly. Wish I had a dollar for every bale I hand tied on that baler as I could retire early. Not sure if the 46 used the same knotter or not, but I suspect not as most who used the 46 did not have the problems. From what I can find the bad reputation of IH balers was due mostly from the 45, and it's poor tying. I do with you luck with it, and actually I would like to see a 45 in action again (in someone else's field). I still have and use an old IH side delivery rake purchased new at the same time of the 45 baler, and a #31 mower. Can't recall if it was a #5 or #15 rake, but I still have the owners manuals for both.

I can understand your frustration after using a 45 baler for the past 42 years. Even new on a good day they will still only tie 98% of the time. Several things I found to help are as follows; follow the operation manual procedures to the letter, sharpen the chamber knife often, keep the plunger adjusted correctly to the chamber, buy a good quality twine, operate with a live power tractor, rake hay into smaller windrows, keep the knotter knife sharp and adjusted per the book, also knotter twine tension. They are not a high capacity baler and need to be operated accordingly. I have had 2 of this beasts, the last
one was given to me by a frustrated farmer to get
it off his property, so this gives you some indication as to what you may and have experienced. My recommendation for you is if you are not willing to adhere to the listed suggestions, get rid of it and buy a NH, same knotters but they work. Good luck.

Denise, Most IHC balers did not have an excellent
reputation for tying. I do have a Blue Ribbon
Service Training Course Serviceman's guide(48pg)
on the 45 baler. This is very in depth on adj.
and servicing the baler. $15 plus $ 3 pp if it
would help. It is used. Chuck

Denise, do you have the manuals for your baler? Without manuals, it will be useless to start replacing knotters with other models. Have you completely adjusted everything accorking to the manuals? Tom
