I picked up this disc today - No tag that I could find, but a lot of the part numbers end in IH. International Harvester maybe?

What exactly is the roller chain assembly supposed to do?

Once I get it identified, I'd like to know what its supposed to look like, and maybe find a manual or other info on it.

Sorry about the small image - I'm on dialup and gave up on photobucket after a few hours of trying.

Please try posting a picture again this time standing closser to the disc so there is no eztra background in the picture around the disc, that will help a lot to see what you have. From the angle it looks like one side has a lot bore blades on it than the other, is that correct? Also a picture with a clise up of the chain you are talking about, I can't see it in the picture. Both IHC and Case back in 30's? used a power angle adjustment on them that run off a chain on one of the gangs and as you drove you pulled a rope like on a clutch lift type plow and that chainged the angle of the gangs. both that I know of were tandems tho. And the one weight box I can see in the picture looks like a Moline. More closed detailed picture and description would help figure it out. And I am on dialup as well.

Joe, a lot of the early discs did not have scrapers on them, they would fasten a chain to a part of the frame and around the spool. This would help eliminate the buildup of mud and trash between the disc blades, The build up would cause the disc to ride on top of the ground, it would not cut and level under those conditions. You would most likely find these chains over the row where the trash was worse.

Okay - so I'm an idiot. Upon looking again, it appears the part numbers start with HI - I had been looking at the numbers upside down and wasn't paying attention.
