IH drum jumpy

My IH 800 planter drum seems jumpy, I was looking at that 90 degree gear box, and was wondering if there is any way to grease it or something, just wondering how to get it to stop being so jumpy because the seed spaceing gets messed up. Thanks for any comments.

I agree with both Tom and Hugh. After selling and using the older air planters, it sounds like you need to check "all" the chains, one with a stiff length can create all sorts of problems. If the rubber on the drum is running on a dry or rusty surface it won't space right. Make sure when you retire that planter for the year to graphite the metal part on the planter where the rubber ring on the drum runs, it is best to remove the drum in retirement, lube all chains, and enjoy a good crop. Check all the chains in the drive system. If any of them aren't nice and flexible, this will cause the drum to jump. To do a good job of checking the chains, take them completely off and flex each link. Even 1 stiff link will make it jump. There's a reason IH went from extended pitch chains on the 800 Series to single-pitch chains on the 900 Series and newer.

Well, I have new chains on the gear box and drive tire, and i just put lub on the drum, but i need to check out the chain that runs up to the 90 degree gear box, it seams like the spring on it is not very stiff either. Thanks for all of your replies.

nates: Have you got lots of graphite on the drum seal. That will make them jump, if not lubricated.
