I have never been around a sickle type mower until I bought this windrower. I only bale about 50 ac. per year this windrower works fine. What kind of maintenance do I need to do on the sickle section to keep it working as it should. It works great now but I know the time is coming.I know nothing about them as far as adjustments, what wears out, what needs to be changed regularly to keep it cutting. Any info. would be great!

Thanks
Mark

Keep the drive chains, clean, lubed and properly adjusted. Ours was a couple of weeks old and Father didn't believe in reading no danged fool manual. The left drive chain hopped off the lower sprocket on a side hill and wrapped under full engine power. What a swine of a job to get that unwrapped inside that welded frame/case.

I can relate to that- after wheel bearings went out. Chain always pops off to the thin side- and gets jammed. Cursed the JD engineers often over why not make that side wide enough to clear a loose chain. Quarter inch more would do it.

As I remember, the 830 is similar to the 800, but has an auger header instead of a draper (canvas) header. Either way, wear parts are what wear..guards get bent on rocks, wear with use, like the sickle sections do, Sickle hold downs wear, plates underneath them wear- just like on a sickle mower. Make sure the wobble box bolts are tight. I think later models had better bracing- once the mounting holes are elongated, you are in deep doodoo. If it has a finger reel, maintain the fingers on the outside of the reel- creates less plugging and wrapping when they are in place. Material wrapping on the reel DOES NOT UNWRAP by itself- cut it off right away. Carry a pipe on the swather to straighten guards when they bend. Like Bob says- with any major machine, tractor, planter, harvester....at least get the op manual. You get one time to plant or harvest, you spend thousands for the machine- spend $30 for the book. Read it and find all the grease zerks. On the 800, lots of people miss the zerk near the right side planetary...hard to get to, but major surgery to replace that bearing.

Thanks for the info. I have a operators manual but they do not go into the sickle bar maintenance very well and I know nothing about a sickle bar. I was hoping to get some, been there done that, info. on adjustment and maintaining just the sickle bar itself.

Thanks Again
Mark

You NEED an operator's manual.

I've seen them on ebay from time to time. I have an 800, and that's where I got my owner's manual.

You can call Deere Techpubs direct and get one... they cost a little money, but you NEED one, for your safety, and the proper care of the machine.

The Techpubs # is 1-800-522-7448.
