New Holland 282 Baler Knots Won't Come Off Billhook

I have a 282 New Holland Baler, the knots won"t come off the billhook. What do I do? Looks like tails are tied into the knot.

I would go with what the other guys said. Take the twine out of the knotters and trip the knotter clutch and rotate the fly wheel by hand and check that the knife arm is rubbing the underside of the bill hook to the specs the manual suggest, this is what wipes the knot off of the bill hook as the bill hook holds the two ends of twine in its' jaws followed by the knife that cuts the two ends and then the hook is suppossed to release the ends with enough pressure. So then it the knife are is wiping at the correct clearence then your bill hook is probably too tight if there is no groving and excessive wear on the bill hook. There is a adjustment nut to adjust the tension on a little coil spring that controls the pressure on the bill hook. The knife arm has to be bent to adjust it, usually using a large creasent wrench. Also some suggested twine tension. The problem is that several things can cause the same symptoms.

Suggest you search the archives on this forum. I had the same problem. Got lots of good advice, then made lots of changes and now it works fine. Not sure which of the adjustments fixed the knotter problem. Sharp knives and smooth billhooks help but don't overlook the twine issue. Steve from New Holland suggested I use the old fashined cheap brown twine. It cuts easier but holds bales together just fine. You might try that too.

Sharpen knives and adjust knife arm. Use a small file and then a fine stone. Knife arm adjustment is real critical. Could also be the bill hook is too tight but more than likely not.HTH

Also check the billhook for heavy wear and grooving. Excessive twine tension can be a factor as well. Sounds like the knife arm is the first place to start though.
