How do you adjust the depth on a JD 55h plow? The lever is for leveling right. I have look at the rear wheel and do not see any place to adjust.

Yes , the 555H has safety trip bottoms . Anything beyond that and I defer to Leroy . He knows his stuff about the older plows and I'm still in my infancy about the JD's at least . ...Randy

Dennis, don't quite understand. Is it plowing to deep, not deep enough? Does it have a hydraulic cylinder? Is the cylinder there or is it locked in storage/transport? When in the ground does the hitch pull it up or pull the front down so it plows to deep? When used the plow should be level front to back and side to side.

Hi , I don't know whether the 55 was available with a hydraulic lift or not but if it wasn't it has a clutch type lift on the left wheel or "land wheel" . There should be a lever . That is the depth adjustment . The right lever is the leveling lever and adjusts just the furrow wheel for leveling the whole plow when it's in the ground . The left lever is called the master lever by JD and controls all axles at once . If it's hydraulic it won't have the left " master " lever but the cylinder functions like the lever . Hope this helps . ...Randy

Randy, the first 55 plows were only clutch lift and there was nothing more to the model no., then the second series were the 55ABH with the A&B being clutch lift while the H designated hydrolic lift and they were the forerunner of the 555 with changes in the way the heavy beam across the top is made, the first it was 2" square bar set on a corner, next that same square bar laid flat, then for the 555 it was a box beam made out of 2 channel irons welded together to form a box. The blade type share did not come about till the 555 but can be put on any of the older plows, the 55 did not have a trip beam either that some of the 555 did have. What I had was a 55ABH with the hydrolics in a 3-12" size and pulled with a JD A that is the same HP as a Farmall M

Randy, wasn't the basic difference in the 55 vs. the 555, the fact the 555 had trip bottoms?

OK , Not being familiar with the 55 I just assumed it was an earlier version of the 555 . It may not be so the depth may not be set the way I described . That is the way a 555 or 555H is adjusted . Sorry for any confusion . I have a few clutch lift plows but they are all red so that's the way they work and a JD 555H ( H meaning hydraulic lift ) . ...Randy

I have a 14 inch 3 bottom trailer plow that I think is similar to yours. (I'm not sure what model mine is) On mine, there is a hydraulic cylinder that raises and lowers the plow and that is what set the depth as well. There is a lever like you talked about that adjust the level of the plow from side to side.

I picked up some of the clip on style hydraulic sleeves that limit how far back the rod end of the hydraulic cylinder can go and use those for adjusting the lowest depth I plow. Unfortunatly the hydraulics on my tractor drift a little too much to just use the cylinder without the blocks, but yours might not.
