I just bought a NH 316 with the pan kicker or ejector type thrower. I have heard nothing but nightmares about the throwers. My question is this, will a model 72 kicker fit on a 316 or would I have to put the 70 kicker on it? Any help on this would be great, thanks

My neighbor has a 315 with a 70 thrower and I looked at a 311 which is the same series as the 316 that had a 70 thrower on it. It should bolt right up. I ran a 336JD many times with the pan thrower and several models of NH with the belt thrower. In my opinion, and almost every farmer I know in my area, the NH thrower is much better. Guess that's why NH switched back over to the belt fairly quickly. The 336 is a very good baler though.

Hayboy1, I have a JD 336 with a pan kicker and wouldn't want to go to a belt thrower unless I had to. I'm not sure if the NH kickers worked like the JD's though.

The pan kickers can me more dangerous if you aren't careful to make sure they are locked out (there should be a safety lockout to prevent it from kicking) when you are working around them, but we haven't had any problems with ours (knock on wood).

As far as the interchangeability of the two throwers, the bale chambers are the same size, but the mounts look a little different (on the NH parts website). Might take a little work, but I would think you could get it put on there. Hopefully some other guys on here will know better than I.

Best of luck,

Josh in WNY

I do appreciate your insights, but maybe I should have been more specific...has anyone had a NH baler with a pan thrower and if so are there anythings I should look for. If it was a pile of you know what, I was wondering if the newer NH throwers ie: model number 72 would fit in place of the model 70 thrower? I figure worst case scenario I could just replace the pan kicker with a belt style kicker. Thanks again

Some areas to check on a 75 or 77 pan thrower are: Valve detent for smooth operation, can get rusty if stored outdoors. Valve adjustment is critical; adjust with feeler gauge as described in the op manual. Broken return latch springs and rough, worn U-bolt that supports these springs. Idler assembly for the pump drive belt can sieze causing belt slippage. About the only difference between a 75 and 77 is the return filter on the 77. A 316 was designed to accept a shaft-drive 70 belt thrower or the hydraulic drive version of the 70, which is almost as good as the current 72 belt thrower. Bottom line, if the 75 pan thrower isn't torn up, loose in the trip linkage, and welded up with plow shares, I'd get a manual for it and have a go at it. 45007510 is the part number for the 75 op manual and 1-800-635-4913 is the number for NH technical publications.

I guess you answered your own question on the value of the 70. You didn't buy that 316 in Ancram, NY on Saturday, did you?

"please tell me something good about it...."

OK. One of my best friends is rid of it. He thinks that's something good. He wanted to buy that 575 at the same auction as a replacement. But that one brought about $3000 more than either of us thought it was worth. Hope you make out OK with the 316; it has seen a lot of hay and not a lot of TLC. Post here if I can help, I work on balers (among other things) for the local NH store and check in here about every day.

ugh well not exactly what I had in mind, but I think I can make it work out for us. It's actually going to replace our 2nd 315 that went down on us last year. I appreciate your honesty, I will be in touch, thanks again!
