I am in the process if getting a JD 2-14" Model 44 trip plow back into working order. Just finished rebuilding the trip mechanism, clicks great now. But now it's down to the rims. The tires were rotten beyond recoginition, so they're gone. I found some replacement tires and have the tubes to go with them. The rims are in very rusted shape but are very solid. I wire brushed them pretty smooth on the inside and feel OK, not pretty but OK. Do you think that I need to go as far as to have them sandblasted? How tough are the tubes that'll go in them? It's just a working plow, not restored to new. Rust on the outter rims is OK for me, but what are your thoughts in the inner rim?

I needle gunned the inside of my plow rims and they were left pretty rough and the tailwheel was left with pin holes so , as was suggested down below - I duct taped them with about 4 layers . Has held for about 9 months now . But plow has only been used for about 4 hours in that 9 months . We'll see how it holds up this year if it ever warms up and dries out around here . I've heard of cutting the center circumference out of a bad tube and using that as a sleeve but I've never tried it . ...Randy

Randy, the duct tape will work for years, the worst problem will be if you have a flat and have to remove the tube for repair, it can cause the tube to stick and possibly tear as they a lot of times due in older tires as well. My tractor has it on a rear wheel for +20 years now.Lester (Leroy)

any automotive body shop supplier can get it, otherwise, order it directly from them about 35.00 a quart. it goes a long way.

i use a product called por 15. its a rust conversion primer. you brush two coats on, hardens tough as nails, has a slick finish too. works great for rear rims if you load em with chloride, if the tubes leak, the salt has no effect on the por 15. heres a cub rim with por 15.

simple- wrap the inside of those muva's with duck tape. This will prevent tube abrasion.
Used to have "flaps" that did essentially the same thing- hard to find now. Tape's cheaper, and works just as well.

go to a real paint store and ask for OSPHO or their version...it kills rust and leaves a phosphate coating so rim doesnt start rusting again...as long as you have all the scale off the inside the tube should be ok.
