Guys, if you had to choose between these two balers for smalltime hobby baling, which would you choose? Can anyone give me pros/cons of each? All comments welcome, good or bad.

Thanks!

Tom

Hands down, I would take the JD 336. We have both a 336 and an old S68 and the 336 bales circles around the older baler. Price has to be concidered though. If you were concidering a NH in the same age range as the 336, it would be a toss up in my opinion.

Tom, one of the first things to check when you are getting bananna shaped bales is bale tension. Make sure your bales are tight enough. This might also be a matter of having to feed the hay to the baler even faster.

After that I would start looking at the hay dogs (you can also install wedges in the sides of the chamber). If they aren't holding the hay inplace when the plunger pulls to the front, it doesn't let the next charge of hay fill the chamber the way it should.

If neither of those work, you are probable looking at an adjustment problem in the feeder tine that pull the hay into the bale chamber.

Hope that helps,

Josh in WNY

I prefer NH balers for one reason only. They have a much better bale thrower then the JD in my opinion. However, your talking a baler built in the 60's and one built in the late 70's early 80's. If they are both in good condition and the price is comparable, hands down the JD is better. Much higher capacity and easier to make good bales. The other important thing is which dealer is closer and easier to get parts from.

It depends on the price. Your comparing two balers made in different decades. I would rather have the JD 336 if it were the same price as the S68, hands down just for the fact its a newer model. I want to say the 336 may even have a higher capacity then the S68.

For hobby baling, the S68 does just fine (I have a 68, and have owned a S67). However, some NH balers have a tendency to produce "bananna bales". This is an easily overcome problem once you know how to "tweak" your baler to make a good tight square bale.

Parts support is about the same, price for green can be higher, but then some items for the older NH"s will impact your wallet as well. Consider how close the dealer or parts support is and do you feel comfortable with them.

So, again, your not comparing apples to apples.
