Hey All Looking at buying a john deere 1010 24ft field cultivator for spring tillage. I chisel plowed in fall. Is an Allis chalmers 190xt big enough to pull it. I have the option of running it with the wings up or removing them all together. just wondering what horsepower would be required. thanks in advance

Ross

Ok so 24' is to big. IF I do buy it anyway Planning for future/ Bigger tractor/ would it be better to take wings off and run it as a 16', or should I leave wings on and dig deeper. More wear with wings on? Thanks for the info.

Ross

Not to bash AC, as I really like certain AC products, but the 190XT was one of the lightest 94HP tractors ever made at that time. It really was underweight for its power. The only tractors that would be worse would be some of the new cheapo "plastic" tractors. I'd have to agree with everyone else, you'd have to really weight it down and then it would still to be too much. You could be asking for transmission/rear end problems. They were deficient in that department also.

Field cultivator isn't like a disk - where more weight = more depth. The shovels pull in on thier own, the wheels limit depth. You won't go deeper because of the added weight on a fc.

So, the wings will add a little compaction to your fields. In dry years, not much difference. In a wet year, better with the wings off.

Not a biggie either way probably.

94hp would not be enough 'here' for 22ft. I pulled 16' with 85hp, then 22ft with 135hp, hope to manage 24ft with the same hp this year.

A lot depends on how deep and fast you want to go. For chemical incorporatin 3" to 4" deep is best. Unlike a disk, with a field cultivator faster is better, stirs up soil better. To travel 6+ MPH you should have a minimum of 5 HP per foot of implement width. 7 HP would be better if you have any hills.

Ross, I would imagine that a cultivator that large would be a load for an XT. If you did have enough power no doubt you would probably be underweighted as well. Somewhere around 18 would probably be better for you. Hope this helps. Mike
