I had a JD 30 and pulled it with an A. The JD A did not have to work hard. Yes, live or independent power would be better but the combine will work without it.

Back in the day: in the 1960"s my first combine was a used JD 12A w/ a small engine for power. I pulled it with a WD AC and pulled a flare box wagon on the side. Got a JD 30,pulled it with the WD45 a couple of years and had to use PTO for combine power.Hand clutch got used a lot but WD45 still had plenty of power.. Did that for a couple of years before picking up a Gleaner self propelled. Plenty of JD 12A"s and 30"s around in that era and a lot of JD A"s, G"s M"s,U"s,88"s/77"s,333"s and 44"s were used for power on these small pull combines. One neighbor had a little IHC combine ,must of been around 3" Cutter head he pulled with an IH B.

I know a guy thats got a 60,G,A,B,H,M,MT for sale. What do you mean by live power?I don't know alot about these tractors I'm only in my mid 30's and they are all before my time.I just thought it would be neat to restore some of this older stuff for the younger people like myself to see.I'm just a farm kid that moved to town that still has this tractor stuff in my blood. My combine is a p.t.o.type I don't know if that matters. Also can you help with the horse powers on above tractors. Thanks Blaine

Live power and independent PTO are connected differently from the drive wheels. If you have them you can disengage the clutch and the PTO keeps the combine running - good for when you need to stop for a second to let the combine handle some thicker grain. The 60 is the only one of these that has it and it is independent. Independent has a lever to turn PTO off/on and Live is controlled by the foot clutch (push part way down to stop forward movement and all the way down to stop the PTO.)
Without either the PTO is connected to the drive wheels and 2 things can happen: 1) inertia can keep the tractor moving forward and 2) an overload can plug up the combine (like when you wanted to let the combine catch up but now it stops when you really wanted it to keep combining.)
Every once in a while someone bushhogging without either live or independent will try to stop and the spinning blade will push the tractor right into something like a fence or a pond....

An A will do it,but it'll give ya fits without live power. A 60 would be better if you need to stick with a Deere. I used to do a lot of custom work with mine pulling it with an Oliver 77.

Model A? As in JD A? Should work fine, that is about same size and power of IHC M that father used on combine. IHC H was used a few times also on bottom ground oats- worked a bit slower. Uncle used AC WD45 on combines- JD30 and AC90(?) AllCrop . Neighbor used a JD60- this same basic JD A but live power PTO. The AC and JD60 PTO were handier than using IHC M wih trans drive PTO- Might want to consider that depending on what you're planning to do with the combine. RN
