Slip Shafts on Bush Hog 160

I have an older Bush Hog 160 mower with three gear boxes. I need to replace the seals on the horizontal shafts of each gearbox. I can't get the horizontal shafts from the center gearbox to the outboard gearboxes to compress so that I can remove the shaft from the splined shaft on the gearboxes. They look like typical PTO slip shafts, but I can't get them to move. Tried WD 40, heat, hitting with a 3 and 5 lb. hammer. I need help before I break something. Thanks

not familiar with your machine, but if it is a bat wing can you put the oil to it and work the wing up and down and make the oil circulate around the shaft better. if it stuck and its not a bat wing, you might try drilling a small hole or two in the area that you think its stuck at and then put your soaking oil down in these holes. applying heat to a shaft like that can be dangerous. it can get grease hot enough to blast out the tube and if your in front of it blow hot grease out all over you. been there done that. worse case - remove one of the u joints by pressing the caps off and disassembling it. you can use a vise to do that if you have one that isn't bolted down to a work bench. i really don't know why it want slide enough to let you remove it in the normal way. it has to have something stuck up in the end of the shaft. do you have a pressure washer, if not a trip to the local car wash might flush the tubes out real good.

Thanks for the advice. It's not a batwing-it's a fixed deck. Probably predates batwing mowers. I'll give it a try.
