Fertilizer spreader

We are in the market for a new fertilizer spreader. Our old one rusted out after 4 years (don't ask:) We have used Baltic spreaders because they are cheap, but they are cheap. We need a three point 6-800 pounds. What have you had good luck with?

Agri-Supply has some fiberglass spreaders for about $400. I don't know how they compare to Vicon though. bjr

Vicon sounds like the ticket for you. The hopper is fibre and the internals are mostly stainless steel. The frame has a pretty hard coating that stands up fairly well to a lack of cleaning. They are rather expensive, but so is a new spreader every 4 years.
Lely also makes a pretty good spreader I think, and I beleive it's mostly stainless.

I know about not cleaning them as often as they should be. Sometimes it just works out that way.... Vicon will tolerate that fairly well.

Buy a Herd seeder spreader and never look back---best spreader on the market and you can seed with it as well.

I think that the Vicon spreaders are by far the best(and probably most expensive). They have a Fiberglass hopper,and many Stainless Steel parts. They also spread very evenly due to the reciprocating arm system instead of the 'cyclone' type system. Ours holds about 650# and will speread about 15-18 feet either side of the tractor.

I always pressure wash, let dry and spray with new engine oil..my three point is 21 years old and looks like new..if you don't clean, oil or paint, they will rust out in a couple of seasons.

We bought a new Howse fertilizer spreader about 15 years ago.

Keep the revolving spreader clean and painted.

Keep the bottom of the bin clean and painted.

Never had any problems with it except for the time a possum got "trapped" in it and could not get out.

Herd also makes a good spreader.

We use the Herd to spread grass seed; might be too light weight for fertilizer.
