I recently bought a JD 2-16 trip plow for a guy down the road. It"s in great shape, except for the tires. I need new ones and I am trying to finds some. The size says 6 x 16 on the tire. I haven"t been able to find anything used at the local tire shops. And they want WAY TOO much for new ones at the impliment store. Any idea what that size would compare too in a automotive tire? I can find a bunch of old auto tires, but know one is for sure if it"ll fit. Doesn"t have to be pretty, but functional. Any ideas?

Reading your post on the plow tires. First the tire you have is not a 6 X 16 tire but a 6:00 X 16 tire, the 6 in a tire desigination was used when the tire size was measured bu the outside diameter and not the rim size such as a 6 X 32 tire is the same size as a 6:00 x 20 and that measurement designation was used on tires for both cars and trucks in the 1920's with the change from outside to rim size in late 30's. So the tire you actually have is either a 6:00 X 16 or a 6:50 X 16 tire. Now those 16" are hard to find even new. Now the new car tires are measured by sidewall height and total width and in a 16" they are usualy either a 50 series or a 60 series and will be too short of a sidewall with too wide a rim width, they need either a 6 or 7" rim to work and you have a 4" rim. So that leaves one option and that is a light truck tire such as the 215 - 85 X 16 that has a tread widdth of 6.5" and a sidewall height of 6.5'' and a bead width of 5.0" that will work OK on a 4" wide rim, The 6:00 X 16 tire measured 5.5" in width and 5.5" in sidewall height and was designed for your 4" wide rim. The 235 - 85 will be just slightly bigger than a 6:50 X 16 tire that was used on a lot of the plows. When out in the rain this morning to measure them. The 235-85X16 was used on the Dodge dualy 1 tom pickups. Now the 235-85X16 tire that is the common one is to wide for that rim and would be too tall to let the plow reach it's operating depth. Now that truck tire will be a 6 or 8, possibly a 10 ply while your orignal plow tire was a 4 ply. Instead of the 28 lb. preassure that was called for with the orignal tire that was not enough to keep the dirt from getting between the bead and rim that you needed 35 lb for you will be able to get by with as low as 15 lb pressure, just do not go over 28 lb before you split the rim

A good used 16" pickup tire will work just fine. They should be pretty easy to find and not too expensive. Hope this helps. Mike
