I"m needing to spread some lime and all I have is the 3 point fertilizer spreader. I"ve always been told that they don"t work very when trying to spread lime. What if you mixed in some of the pellet lime with it? Would that make much of difference? Or is that just gonna make a bigger mess?? Thanks

We use a dry manure spreader. The regular apron with a beater in the back. We fill it half full and go fast, our New Holland is geared kinda fast for lime. I am looking for a used spreader to gear down the apron adn use exclusively for lime. A traditional spreader being much $$. I have to agree, the fertilizer spreader probably wont work. It will only feed the bottom, and then you have a mess of lime stuck in the spreader.

Thanks for the input. The reason I"m asking about the 3 point funnel type fertilizer spreader is that"s all I have access to. Nobody local rents lime spreader"s. I would just use the pellets but at $185 a ton compared to $85 a ton crushed, that doesn"t make much sense.

I figured that it could pack in pretty tight, but then I thought maybe if I mixed in a few bags of the pellets to a full hopper that it might "feed" a little better. Guess I might try it and see...if I can hit a day with no wind. Thanks again.

How much are you spreading? If you are spreading an appreciable amount, you might just want to rent a spreader from the local co-op.

We've spread hundreds of tons of dry lime with a John Deere LF fertilizer distributor 8' model. It works perfect for lime or pelletized fertilizer. The one I have is one of only three that I have ever seen so not sure how common they are. I wouldn't even think of using a hopper type 3pt spreader after using the John Deere.

Sure, it will work "BUT" if its windy the lime dust will go everywhere but where you want it. Oh-ya you will need a dust mask too!

lime is hard to spread with a spreader. if you can use just the pellets you should be ok. don't let it get damp. i've been told to put lime dust around my grand mothers house to keep snakes and lizards out. you have to make a 1 inch high ridge out of it for it to work they say.

Casey the trouble with lime is it packs in the hopper very badly. I have spread a lot of lime with a truck, after you get it flowing it is fine but if you do not watch what is going on you will get to the end of the field and your hopper will still be full.
