What do I do with this rake?

If you read my post on the JD Model 9 sickle bar mower, you know the story... basically, I'm trying to clean up a field. Wondering what kind of rake this is and if it's worth anything? Seems a shame to let the scrap man take it if someone can actually put it back to use. I've not tried mowing it (hopefully this weekend) so for now, all I have is the pictures.

Thanks in advance for any info you can give me.

Forgive me, what grain drill? I've got the 594 rake, the most likely New Idea Manure Spreader and a JD Model 9 sickle bar mower.... unless one is called something else that I didn't realize.

In my trade, I deal with several Amish and Menonite people from the Lancaster area. I realize they appear to be private, and are, in that they won't get in your business. However, they're very eager business people, and will gladly talk with you about your equipment, without predijuce to your "English" status. I'd bet muy straw hat on it!!

Any more info about the grain drill? You're close enough for me on that one...

Good info to know. I guess I'll post this stuff down in the Lancaster Farming paper and see what happens. I think I'll put it up here too. It's funny, my dad got that paper every week for at least as long as I can remember and we cancelled the subscription after he pased away... looks like I need to contact them again. I'm so thrilled that there's actually still a use for this stuff rather than just junking it.

Yep, its a JD rake all right. ive got one and have used it for 20 yrs or so. It was dads. He quit it cause the bull gears teeth got wore down and that caused the bars to slip outa time, meaning when the bottom bar was near the ground, the teeth wernt. I brought it home, welded the teeth with the gear still mounted and greased the heck outa it and have used it every since. JD made these till at least 1960, looking JUST like this one

Well here's something REALLY interesting. I just engaged my brain and remembered that when we cleaned out the barn before jacking it up and putting a new foundation under it, I salvaged some old JD manuals that were hanging on a hook in the lean to.

I thought maybe I had the manual to that sickle bar mower and went running upstairs. Turns out I don't, but I DO have a manual to the old JD 40 tractor, something called a "One Bottom Two Way Integral Tractor Plow No 422" AND the manual to a JD No 594 Side Delivery rake! According to the note made in the manual, my family purchased the rake on June 6, 1952. The pictures look EXACTLY like the rake in my pictures and I can't imagine there was another one on the farm.

So - does anyone think my pictures go with the manual I have and it is a JD No 594? If so, anyone want to value it? The book's in great shape too. A little dirty but totally intact.

I could not see it that good but very good chances it is that model deere, would have been made someware between about 47 and 56. I have a 594L that is a low wheer version on rubber and 3 older versions with 3 bars instead of 4. Have seen them sell for $400 at auction. A few year ago I had found some items that I thought my Amish friends would be interested in and talked to them about them, one of the items the guy had on his list that he had was a JD 594 Rake that I did not think much about as hard to haul. The machinery was in central Ill. and I am in Ohio and my Amish friends are in eastern Indiana. Well he wanted that rake. It was priced at $150 and he paid me to go the 650 mile round trip to get it for him so it was not a cheap item for him.

I didn't get a chance to go take close up pictures today due to a brush fire on the property that I had to deal with (BAH!) but I'll snap some close ups tomorrow and post them.

The rake in the picture I cannot see good enough to tell for sure but it could be a McCormick but it wooks a bit more from what I can see to be a J I Case, the caster wheels on the rear are not right for a McCormick, they had a solid disc wheel, Case had the spokes, If I could see the front wheels and gearbox them I believe I could tell you what you have, eather way try to sell it in an amish area and if good you are looking at a value of $150 to $500 partly depending on if you can deliever it. The dump rake in the other picture the amish do not u8se any more, that would go for a lawn ornement. I have several McCormick steel wheel rakes here for rebuilding for sale and also a Case.

I'm about 2.5 hours north east of Lancaster.... always felt funny about stopping and asking them anything when I'm down there (it's been YEARS) since they're so private and I respect that... but I sure do like watching them work. My dad's family stopped farming before I was born so watching that type of thing always fascinates me even though I know it's hard work... so maybe I will take a drive down there...

As for my zip it's 18436.

Both your rake and manure spreader have value IMHO greater than scrap. I have two thoughts:

1) What is your zip?

2) Since you're close to Lancaster, there's a whole bunch of Amish around there who've forgotten more about old equipment than most folks ever knew. I wouldn't be afraid to ask the next Amish person you see about marketing your iron.

Id have to agree with watson504. IH I have an oldtimer friend that gave me one about 5 years ago. I compined it with my J.D. rake (has rubber wheels all around) and made a good rake used it on about 120 acres every year until last year bought a 10 wheel V rake. If I saw the raking teeth I could tell forsure.Jd vrs IH hang different.

I know this may seem hard to believe, but I have an IH rake very similar to this, that I still use to rake approx. 60 acres with each year. Mine does have rubber tires, but otherwise it is very similar. You might figure approx scrap value, then offer it for sale for about that amount. You may be surprised to find that people like me would use it. I use mostly stuff others would not have on the property. I just bought a square bale loader for $50 and plan on repairing it and putting it in the field this year.

I REALLY hate to scrap it if someone could use it. I'd even take slightly less than the scrap value for it just to see it put back to use. I'm not that far from Lancaster PA so I thought of posting it down in the area as I tend to see a lot more older things in use when I'm down there and farming it's that big up here in the northeaster part of the state anymore unfortunately. I actually thought of keeping it and using it for lawn decoration but my family said I could only keep one and I think I've opted to keep this one:

I do believe the rake above in original post is an IH rake. Mine is a newer version of what you have, but I bet some of the parts would interchange. If it were closer I might be interested. In PA you should be able to find a buyer. Try advertising in some of the free classifieds. I have had good success buying and selling for no cost. Someone will put it to use, and be happy to have it.
