JD 530 Round Baler update and questions

I have the cylinder tore apart on the left (potentially lazy) side. I think maybe from the looks of the seals it could be leaking by. The seal on piston with raised groove is basically flat. New one-groove stands up maybe 1/16th inch. Couldn't get piston off shaft and will have to take to a press tonight. Was wandering when I get all together and on baler, is an empty cylinder going to cause problems first time I try to raise. Right now that latch is locked down and tight due to what I think is warpage of door.
Another question - say the door is warped - does anyone have the correct procedure from JD for the chain and hydraulic straighten technique. i.e.-do I have to have cylinder unhooked on warped side or what and where do you hook chain on door. This will be last resort but thought I would ask.
I'll check in tonight to see what you all say.

Ya, the nut was on the piston shaft and tight. Barrel, piston and shaft look good and smooth.
Just was envisioning the gate latch on the side I haven't worked on opening normally but the side with the cylinder with no fluid in it not unlatching until some fluid gets in cylinder thus causing the gate to twist/warp. Although!-it would be twisting/warping it back straight as long as it didn't go too far. Think I am going to get a helper to run the tractor so I can watch and make sure it doesn't screw something up.
Evidently, no one has the instructions from JD on how to twist it back with a log chain?

I disagree with the "lazy cylinder idea" not allowing gate to fully close! With no hay inside baler the gate should shut and latch barring any obstruction (binding) to latches or a bent gate. But when hay is added(driving down windrow) pressure from bale forming will force gate to unlock if cylinder is leaking!!!!! !!! Michael a freshly re-built cylinder WILL NOT cause you any problems after re-installation. Just fully raise and lower gate a few times to purge air. Jim

Was there a nut holding the piston on the ram? If so there is most likly o-rings inside the piston.

When you go to lift after reinstalling the cylinder just go slow and watch it close the first 2 or 3 times you go up and down. Remember to cycle it a few times to get all the air out.

And if the cylinder really wasn't leaking you may have a sprung endgate and have to use the chain method to straighten it.

There have been many endgates sprung from coming back down on a bale on one side or the other.

You can do a little measuring to see where it is sprung. Measure from the hinge point straight down to the bottom end of the gate and also from the cylinder pin down to the bottom edge of the gate. That will tell you if the C shape of the gate has opened up or not.
