Has anyone here ever done a true comparison of a JD 348 w/ejector vs a NH 575 with thrower? I am talking production and capacity, any help would be appreciated

Have both with 1/4 turn chute. 348 makes a better bale when fed heavy. 575 nh will get the hay in faster with rotary feed but bales get strange when fed to much. I find the auger feed on 348 is matched better to the plunger/bale case capacity. Plus it has more gear/shaft drives with less chain drive than NH. NH is higher and hard to see over and I have seen them break the fly wheel off when over powered. Tell your custom baler you want 20 flakes per 38 inch bale and to drive/feed the baler correctly.

Dont know on the comparison, but, in my opinion, John Deere makes Tractors, planters, combines, disks, ect. NEW HOLLAND builds hay equipment. I go out of my way to buy new holland hay equipment, except for the tedder.... IF they were making bannana bales, something is wrong.

I don't know which one has more capacity but I had two different custom operators with NH 575's bale for me last year and both made banana shaped bales. Needless to say I was not impressed.

The Deere bale ejector is the limiting factor in this comparison. When running at full capacity, there simply isn't time for the pan to reset and clear the next bale as it exits the chamber. One of several reasons New Holland discontinued the pan thrower. Which baler would have more capacity equipped with a quarter turn chute will spark a lively debate.

One way to get around the pan kicker not being able to reset is to make the bales a little longer. We run a JD 336 with the pan kicker and don't have very many problems with it. We have also used NH balers in the past and they worked just as well as the JD's. One problem we had with the NH belt throwers was if you try and make real tight bales, the belts can chew through the string and break the bale before it get into the thrower.

I'm not sure on the difference in capacities, though. I have noticed that JD rates all their balers to be run by a 35 hp tractor. NH balers are rate for 35 min HP for the 565 up to 80 min HP for the 580.

I think it all depends on the guy running the baler. Someone who knows how to adjust it just right can put a lot of hay up no matter what color it's painted. I would like to see so actual numbers on what the different balers can put out though.

I think plunger stroke speed is probably one of the better ways to compare capacity. Most guy's think 12-15 strokes per bale is ideal so strokes per minute will give a good idea on the baler's capacity. I think the 5765 is a 93 stroke per minute baler and the Deere is about the same. The big Agco baler (used to be the Hesston 4590, not sure what the number is now) is a 100 stroke per minute baler and I've seen our's tie a bale every six strokes for a short period of time. We used to run older NH balers but after running the Hesston for two seasons I'd have a hard time running anything but an inline baler. Nice thing about the inline balers is they will make the same bale at 50 strokes per bale as they will at 12 strokes per bale without changing anything.

I do appreciate everyone's input. We in fact do bale a fair amount here in N. England. (35k) I use all New Holland equipment but have been torn between the purchase of a 348 or a 575. Old habits are hard to break I guess with the NH. I do agree with the tedder issue. I just picked up a new Pequea TT4000. One hell of a well built machine from what I can see. Now just have to wait for the dang snow to stop so we can actually get the grass to grow!! Thanks again

You know about New Hollands and like others have said JD makes a good machine too. If you are getting a new/newer machine I would definately look into the inline machines though. No personal experience but from what I've heard they are darn good machines. I'd get the machine from whomever treats you the best and supports their product the best. I'm pretty sure JD and NH both keep stuff in stock but the Agco stuff I have no idea. Good luck.

I have a neighbor who swears by his inline Hesston, and it does make a super nice consistent bale. Most of the ones I have found lately have been wire which as most of you know does not satisfy the all too picky horse customers!! Thanks again
