uneven bales from a NH 268 baler

I have a NH 268 baler that produces bales that are longer on one side than the other about 25% of the time. I have set the bale length to be the same, I began all over on the compression handles, making sure each was turned down exactly the same number of turns. The needles appear fine, the springs on the needles are alright. It is a pain because a lot of these bales simply fall apart when they come off the elevator in the barn.. any suggestions?

My manual also states that the PTO should run at 540RPM. That gives me about 57 stokes per minute. As long as I keep it crowded I get perfect bales. If I try to bale slow and small windrows I get junk bales. Also I would check my knives to make sure they are sharp and the clearance is under .0010".
I had one get screwed up and it wasn't cutting the crop clean and the bales were rolling around sideways on me. It got so bad that it would actually bind the plunger and break pins. My recommendation is get a manual. Its well worth the expense.

you need to adjust the feeder tines or your windrow size. The feed needs to be consistant.
A manual is needed.

Our NH baler makes uneven bales too if we run too many RPMs at the PTO. Slow it down a bit and it should correct it. I am guess when I tell you this but maybe 475 RPM at the PTO is where we run it.... I adjust more by sound of the baler than anything.

Guess we could try to readjust it but it works fine if we slow down some and helps save on wear and tear.

I appreciate your advice but I doubt if that is our problem as my 80 year old father does the baling and he does not push things to hard. I am guessing he runs the tach around 450 from what I can tell as I load behind the baler. It is so annoying because the baler rarely has a knot problem, I am guessing maybe one in a thousand....the rest of the baler works fine, we grease it each morning, I did change the belt last year which made a big difference in pick up ability.

Thanks for helping

How are the springs on the hay dogs? #20 in the pic. There are six of them, three top, three bottom.

When my 540 makes circle bales this is the first place I look.

Restrictor is #22. Hay dog is #19, held by pin #21, and spring #20.

Actually, there are only 5. Been there, done that. Do you have restrictors in the sides of the bale chamber? They"re like a piece of angle iron bolted to the sides of the chamber - I have 3 on each side. Helps quite a bit. Helps to feed full windrows. Whispy light ones tend to form bananas. You can adjust the stroke of the feeder rack, in or out at the front of the plunger where the arm attaches. Try some different settings. Aslo, see that the aluminum feed forks are all there and functional. If you replace, be sure that you use either NH or aluminum of similar grade. They do break - have recovered a couple out of the feed bunks!

No restrictors on the chambers, not sure why not. I bought the baler when I bought the farm last year, I must confess, I am much more familiar with John Deere but I got a deal on the baler to leave it on the farm so I am learning to speak New Holland.

They seem to be OK, I can see where one has been stretched to fit again, I am guessing the previous owner had one break off and he just twisted it around again but, there seems to be the same tension on both aluminum forks.

Sounds like you need to adjust your feeder carriage penetration. Should be in your manual. Could also be the telescopic link being broke or loose, and of course with the old NH balers (I have a 273) you need a nice big windrow and a slow speed.

Time to order a manual I see.... I have the big windrows and I do not go that fast as I bale with a wagon behind with a Massy Ferguson 50.

When standing at the back of the bailer, is the left side or right side of the bail longer?

One thing I've done on my NH68 is adjust the tension crank for the "long" side a few turns more than the "short" side until the bales square up. This is against the norm, but it works.

I also have problems in light material, so I tend to rake the rows bigger when the hay is thin and make an attempt to keep the material feeding into the left side of the pickup. It seems to help as well.
