IH 440 baler needles

I was trying to get ready for hay season. So I pulled the old baler is the shop to give it the once over, sharpen knives, replace bent teeth the normal stuff and I decided to change the wire rollers at the tip of the needles and boy was that a mistake. I can't seem to get the rivetor bolt or whatever it is holding that sucker in place. I took a grinder and shaved the head off flush and then tried to use a punch but that won't work. ANY words of wisdom would be greatly appericated. thanks and sorry for the long post.

Thanks for the help. I DID NOT take the needels off I just can't seem to perswade the rivot out of the hole It is not as easy as it should be.

i don't know if this is the best idea i've ever had or not, but a little bit of heat on it might make the edges roll over ease around a real small punch. heat it very sparingly and have the punch ready to drive in while its warm. drilling it out would be best, but the rivet probably spins on you. i dremel tool with a small long thin grinder might do the trick. you may be able to hold one end with a pair of vise grips that has something small enough to go between the plyer jaws and the rivet. i love a good chalenge. support the needle in some way before you drive against it very much.

well I just thought I would let you know I did get one of the rivets out last night turns out the service tech was right the hole is countersunk on both sides. I will change the other one tonight. Thanks for your help and support.

I wish I was to the point the rivet was spinning I don't have it to that point yet. I talked with a tech at the dealership and he told me the hole is countersunk(is this true?) and that I dont have the head off of it yet he suggested I use a bigger drill bit to actually renove the head then it should drive out of there. I will keep you posted thang for the help.

i thought we had covered ths problem already. do not remove the needles. you will never get them lined up right again without spending all day on them. just tighening the bolts that hold them to the u shaped drive bar will throw them off, even if you only move the bole 1/2 turn. a littel adjustment on the bar makes a large difference on the out end of the needles and how they enter the knotters. lots of luck.

Guess I would try to drill it out if you can get a dril in there. If you remove the needles from the baler then you will have to get them adjusted properly when you put them back on. May be you could find or borrow a rivit tool used on sickle bars?
