I have a Ford 801 and when Im pulling an old pittsburg cultivator with six shanks and sweeps and no gauge wheels or center coulter blade, the cultivator and tractor does fine when moving slow but when you try to speed up, it starts a rocking motion from front to back. the faster you go the harder it rocks and the plows go from deep to shallow, deep to shallow. I have never seen gauge wheels on this type cultivator. Thanks for any helpful advice. Eddie

add some weight on your front end. if you can set your raise response to slow. i'm not familiar with your tractor, but on ih 574 you can adjust the raise response so the draft control is slower to react. some weight on the implement might help also.

First of all the cultivator if it is real that is not a primary tillage instrument. If yours is like i think ,it is for cultivating crops. If it is the one with springs then it can be used like a chisel plow. I've got one of each.I need to replace some of my springs. It could be like the others said and the controls butfor what your doing and i assume yuou are not doing large acreage then do like you figured out and slow down. It may not be fast ,fun or impressive but it gets the job done. Figure out what you are doing, trying to do , and how much then you can put it all in prespective. I got a old style 1950s field cultivator but it cannot do the depth, speed, and trash clearance that the newer ones can.

sounds like your draft control is pulsing if your cultivator is 3 point.

Thanks for the reply. If the draft is pulsing why wouldn't it pulse when going slow. If I drive real slow it works good, the plows stay the same depth but speed up and its rocking again. The hydralic lift arms on the tractor stay the same when its rocking. Shouldn't they be moving up and down if the hydralic pulsing? Maybe I don't know enough about the hydralic system. What would solve the pulsing problem? Thanks Eddie

That's not too unusual. The springs of the field cutlivator are causing the surging, basically you can't go too fast or too deep. You pick which - slow down or go shallower. Or add more shanks so it pulls harder, & you have to - slow down or go shallower.

Just normal?

I would agree with BCnT in that your top link may not be properly adjusted. You should have a manual for your tractor and that would tell you how to adjust the top link. It may be you are trying to go too deep.
