I'm still looking to replace my NH 479 haybine this year. The rollers are losing rubber and I've had a lot of problems with a bearing going out on the top roller. Looked at a nice 469 couple of weeks ago at an auction. I stopped at $1300 - probably should have went a little higher. Anyway, there is another auction coming up next week that has another 469 but also has a JD 1209 listed. I don't know anything about JD machines. Can someone fill me in - are they good machines, things to look for besides rollers, what one might go for for price, etc.

I quess another question - about what do you think a good 469 should sell for? Did I mess up on the last one? These auctions are in western NY if area makes a difference on pricing.

I have a NH 492 that out performs any others. I have no experience with the earlier models. I would stick with the NH.

Going from any NH Haybine to a JD moco is certainly a step or two down. "Haybine" is a registered trademark of New Holland- anything else is a copycat, and inferior. Bought a NH 479 in about "74, folding it up, needing to block a wheel? Nonsense. Only thing that can beat it is a discbine. Bought the NI in 1990, great machine, yes, would look at other brands, but comparing a NH Haybine to anything JD put out- no. JD and NH make good balers, but cutting equipment- no.

I apologize for including the word "nonsense"- but since you complain....I ran that 479 behind a 4020 for six years...back then I had 60-80 acres of alfalfa per year, 3 or 4 cuttings. Switching from field to transport position- pull the rope, back the tractor while turning to the right...hitch goes to the right into transport lock position. Worked every time.

If you buy another machine this old your likely to have the same problem with the rollers losing rubber because after 30 years it does dry out and crack. We had a 1209 back in the 70's and it was a good lookin machine but I recall having lots of problems with the wobble box. Something on it was always breaking and needing fabricating. You really ought to step up a notch to the 488 NH. They are dependable, tried and true machines that have been in production since the 80's and are still being produced with little design change.

I had a NH 479 or the near likes. Couple of serious gripes:

Drive shaft was completely enclosed so repair or lube was a major problem.

Boom relied on blocking the opposite rear wheel to change from field to road and back. Very cumbersome and even with attention, it didn't move readily and was hard to get pinned.

Very dissatisfied with mine.

Bought a 1209 which has an open drive shaft and hydraulically controlled boom. Very very much better.

On cutting couldn't tell the difference.

Paid $1200 for the well used NH and $1500 for the not so well used JD.

JD 1209 is one of the best mo-co's JD bullt long with the 1219. Check to see that wobble box(sickle drive) is not loose and mounting bracket has never been re-welded. Also check condition of crimpers.

May be one of the best Deere mo-co's, but still won't hold a candle to a NH 469 or later.

Probably shouldn't answer just based on my CRS memory, but my recollection is our first haybine was a JD 1209 in the late 60s/early 70s. Good machine, but must be pushing 30-plus years.

Charlie, I don't know about the JD haybine but I saw a NH479 for sale in Hamlin, NY earlier this week. Shoot me an e-mail if you want the info
