Going to auction tomorrow to get a hay wagon. went tonight to check things out ahead of time.

1 running gear(no bed) was 5th wheel type. That is where the wheels and low part of front axle turns. Vs just the wheels pivoting. It has a top section that does not pivot so the runners would have a nice base to rest on.

Pros or cons to this type of gear. My other 4 wagons just the wheels turn....

Thanks

Suppose it all depends on what part of the country you're from; people posting below whose opinion I trust all want auto-type steering. Around 'here', nearly ALL wagons (trailers to us) were 5th wheel..... ..because they pull so much better at highway speeds. Most hay wagons (around here) started life as cotton trailers. With a good, rigid bed, I've never come close to turning one over.

had one years ago...anytime we got more than 3 bales high that POS would self dump if you hit the slightest rut...it went over the scales years ago.

have used them before the most important thing to do is block up the front on 5th wheel to control side tipping other than that they work fine

Tippy. Would not want it in a rough field.

They typically travel down the road at 60mph real well, that is the pro.
