Guys
I went to the Half Century of Progress again this year, and after watching some of the plowing I saw a Farmall with a little genius plow go thru that had some kind of attachment to pull the corn stalks into the open furrow that the plow left, that way the next time you made a pass you had less trash and the trach in the furrow was then covered by the next passes dirt. Confused?? Anyway this looked like a wheel off of a five wheel hay rake or something similar. Has anybody seen one of these before? It worked pretty slick. Just curious how common they were.
Thanks
Adam

Adam, I am a member of the I&I club. Our club & the City Of Rantoul puts that show together. I was born & raised on the farm and there were a few of the wheels around. I called my friend Bill Shumate in Urbana ,IL.& asked about them. much to my surprise, he & his father sold them for several years. The name brand was Turfer Stubble Cleaner made in Minnesota. He said he still had a few parts . They came in 2 sizes 3 btm & 4-5 btm. This is what is so great about our show we are blessed to have some of this type of equipment come to our show.Looking forward to 2008 show. Earl

Earl, when is the show this year? I'd really like to get up to Rantoul someday, I was born at Chanute AFB hospital.

Whin I was a kid (50 some years ago) dad had a DC and a 3-14 case plow that didn't like corn stalks very well. We used #9 wire to help pull stalks into furl. I don't know where dad got this rake thing, but it had a bar that folowed in the furl and raked stalks in. As I rember you could get different sizes for different size plowes. Chained it to the back of plow to pull it. When you turned at the end it came out and right back in the furl just fine. It realy help from plugging up and having to get off the tractor and kick the stalks out.

Must have been the same model Case plow that we had. My dad said that if two cornstalks went in at the same time it plugged!! We used one of the rakes pulled behind the plow and it helped a lot.

That wheel thing was most likely something that a very enterprising person thought up and made to do what he wanted.

Back in the days of pulling Little Genius plows (and other brands, too) in cornstalks, we got #9 wire and cut a piece about 8 ft long, then tied one end around the coulter arm (making sure the coulter could still turn) and letting the wire just trail out. When the moldboards were turning soil, the wires were "buried" under the soil. The trash got tucked in between the wire and the soil and did a good job of moving that trash into the furrow and was covered up much better.

Of course, after a few hrs, when we lifted the plow at the end of the field, we"d notice a wire was gone....so we"d tie on another wire. Funny thing is we never plowed up those lost wires in succeeding years!

High yielding Iowa corn harvested by a picker, plus stalk choppers not invented yet, made for a real challenge to plow. Some farmers disked stalks before plowing.
