JD 1240 plateless planters-any good ?

I'm looking for a corn planter and have no experience with plateless corn planters. Plateless sounds good - but is it ????

I've used one for about ten years,biggest thing is make sure you take the time to set it up,get a manual,also don't go to fast 3-3.5 mph and if you can use small flats for seed it works great,also keep the finger pickup area clean the fines can mess up the finger pickups.It's like most equipment it's performance is all about the operator and setup.

neighbor had a 1240. if you have rocks in your field, they can flip up and crack the cast aluminum seed housing and dump a row's corn seed in a hurry.

Plateless is good, just not on a 1240. I have never heard anything good about a 1240 plateless. We had the plate version when I was a kid and that seemed like a good planter. If you want plateless move up to a 7000, much better planter all together. No single jump in my corn yeilds equalled the jump I got when we went to a 7000 years ago.

I have one and it does a very good job, it will save you time when you want to plant a garden. I only have used mine to plant a couple arces a year though. But, don't pay too much for it. I paid $200 for mine and it was in great shape.

Growing up we had the Plate version of that planter. I never heard much good about Deere's early plateless but I didn't hear much at all about it either.

If I wanted a plateless for hobby farming I would buy either a 7000 Deere or a 400 or 500 IH Cyclo.

If you are trying to put food on the table like I am the only older planter I would consider is the 7000 deere (That's what I run anyway) or something newer. White and Allis air planters have some good things about them but parts are hard to get and expensive.

They were an improvement over the plate type, but not as good a plateless unit as the 7000, which has been around since 1974- so it is old, intermediate technology.
