I have looking for advice on baler makes and models, thanks for the help. I have found a NH 271 for around $1,000. Is this a dependable baler, are parts still around?

Steve, We made 7500 bales with our NH271 last year with very few problems. They are a small baler, but adjusted properly(ours gets serviced every winter)they will keep the help on your wagon busy. I run ours with 50 and 60 HP tractors. No problems getting parts.

In my reply to you below, I mentioned I have a NH 270. It is the exact same baler, the 271 has an extra knuckle in the pto for better turning. Everything else is the same.

Parts should be on the dealer shelf if there is any type of baling being done in your area.

The 271 is the last of the lower capacity, good old fashioned NH balers. If you are looking to use a large tractor & get a lot of baling done, you might want something newer. For what you are doing, with a 35-50 hp tractor this would be an excellent match.

I won't say much on price, depends on it's condition & how baler sales go in your area. I'd want it looking pretty nice shape for that money, but if in tip top shape can be a fair deal.

I would probably be using a 85 hp Kubota until I trade off a 830 Case for a 35-50 hp tractor. This should be ok right?

My 270 has kind of a narrow set, with my bigger 85 hp tractor I would run on the windrow with the right tractor tires.

I _think_ the 271 hitch is better & goes a bit more to the left to help on this, but I don't know.

That would be the only issue with using a larger tractor on a 270? Off-setting the hitch doesn't work well on a 270, again I think it does with a 271 because of the extra knuckle.

Steve, I have a NH271 that we pulled out of a fence line about a year and a half ago and after a little playing with it the thing works just fine. Yes they are one of the good balers and yes you can still get most parts for them. I baled around 150 blaes last year with the 271 I have and it did a real good job. It was going to be cut up for scrap so I saved its life LOL
