IH planter...4 row to 2 row?

Has anyone here tried making a two-row planter out of a 4 row #56 IH planter? I have several of these around, so thought I would remove the outer two rows, cut-off the extra framework outside the wheels, and marker mechanism, and have a two-row for planting small plots, etc. Is there any reason this should not work? The rubber tires would provide easy transports, and the hydraulic lift is easier to use than the the ground-drive lift on the older models..but of course it requires using a tractor that has hydraulic capabilities. At any rate, it should be a much cheaper way to go than trying to find, and buy, a similarly-equipped two-row planter.

it is crazy what some people will pay for a mounted 2 row planter. I have seen well used Ford 309"s go at auction for $1000 or more. I thought I got ripped off when I paid $400 for mine.

I've though of doing that because of the demand for 2-row planters and the availability of cheap 4-rows. What has kept me from doing it is the drive mechanism for the fertilizer. It's between the boxes on a 4-row, but would have to be moved to one side for a 2-row. Or the fertilizer tanks could be cut in half. More work than it's worth for me.

Would this make it worth it to you? I saw a 2 row 3 point mounted planter, homemade, with JD 71 units,no fertilizer sell on an auction last week for $1050.

2 main differences there... 3-point mounted and each row unit driven by the press wheel (vs. pull type and transport wheel/transmission driven for IH 56) I did cut down a damaged AC 4-row, 3-point mounted to 2 row, and then used left over parts to make a 1 row. Sold them on ebay for something like $1100-1200 (combined) I might have to look again, if they are selling that well w/o the fertilizer boxes. I wouldn't plant corn w/o starter fertilizer, myself.

They want those things now for deer plots. They either broadcast a little fertilizer or plant without it.

There's a fella putting ads in national magazines now, he cuts down JD 7000 planters, makes a drive of some type for 3pt; and leaves 2 rows on the wheel frame for a pull type too. Sell for either side of $1000.

Must be big business in that these days.

I agree the JD, IHC, & Allis setups where the closing wheel drives the planter box on a 3pt are the neat ones.

Few years ago I bought a bean bar, was the only bidder at $250. Got 15 row units of IHC 295, on a3pt bar. Does a real nice job of planting 15 inch row beans.

But, anyway, quite an investment, now those row units aell for $150 each, or $500 for a 2-row 3pt planter..... Some welding I iron stock & I could make some money! :)
