Howdy all on this glorious Easter Weekend!

I was working on my grain drill and managed to get the fluted feed to slide back and forth as well as get the feeds to turn freely. This drill has not been used for 20 years.

Here is the problem. About 3 months ago, i decided to drop it down and see what happens. Well...What happed was I managed to put a twist into the seed shaft, grind 75% of the teeth off of the drive gear that goes between the main drive on the shaft and the gear on the seed shaft, and i lost 3 teeth on the gear on the seed shaft.

So..after I got everything turning today, I was looking it over to see how to disassemble it...and it looks IMPOSIBLE!

The gear that lost most of its teeth comes out easily by removing a nut and poping a cap off and then it came out. The big problem is there is no way to get the gear on the seed shaft out because there is a collar that is made on the outside of the gear that goes through the main casting on the end of the drill.

Since it is only missing 3 teeth, could a guy just weld some spots on it and then grind them down into workable teeth?
Has anyone else taken this gear out? Does anyone have these gears they want to sell?
HELP!

Chuck

Copy down your serial number and model number and head for JD dealer. Buy Operator Manual and have them print out the parts manual for you. After checking out the price of the parts, you may want to pick up another drill. The Operator Manual tells you to check ratation of the shafts with a large cresson wrench PRIOR to engaging the drill, would have saved your gears. Tom

hey chuck, i have a part book and could scan you some photos that you need. I just got through doing this on the same model, the easiest thing would be to take the whole shaft off and then replacing the gear or working on it, to take the shaft off is not too hard, you unbolt it from the seed cups, take the seed index selector lever loose and then it should slide over and then drop down, that way would be easier than sliding every part off. my e-mail is open, if you need photos or more help, let me know. Burrells implement in oklahoma has all the parts you need, google it and you can get their info.

TX Jim,

Thanks for the comments. I figured that was how to get the shaft out, but the real problem is the large gear on said shaft. Even with the shaft out, the collar that goes through the side of the drill still would not be free would it? It is made onto the side of that gear isn't it? Or is it a bushing?

The gear still would hit on top before you could slide it far enough to one side to clear the bushing and let it drop straight down.

Anyone have a parts book view of an FB-A Drill?

Chuck

Chuck to remove the mentioned shaft one has to remove all drive pins that hold fluted feed wheels in place. Then R&R shaft all the way from center of drill on side with gears with broken teeth. Not easy but can be done.

Them gears turn so terribly slow that I think yes you could build them up and shape them with grinder. I bet it would last for a thousand acres with nary a problem.
