AC Bar Rake Questions

I have a small 10 ac. hay pasture (Coastal Burmuda) that I round bale once per year. Neighbor has a 10 acre pasture of Tifton he wants me to start doing.

I've collected and rebuilt the following. NH851 Round Baler, 459 Moco. and I have been looking for a hay rake but they are hard to find around here.

I ran across an old AC Hay rake, axle driven belt drive. Pretty sure it was a 4 bar. Besides needing tires, it's all operational. Guy wants $400 for it. Doesn't look like much could go wrong with it really, all cast iron, steel, and a few bearings.

Questions:

1) Is $400 a fair price or too much?

2) Will this old bar rake work for what I need, at least get me by until I find a good used wheel rake?

3) Any idea what model this may be? Model 77 or 78

Thanks,

Richard

If you go over to the left side of the page here, and search implement photos, you will find a picture of a shiney, fresh painted A/C # 78 rake. I think the difference between the rakes is the rear axle. The one on the diagonal is preferred, as it turns better. $400 is an excellent price, as long as everything works.

Dave, Good looking Rake. I replied earlier but it never posted. The Rake I'm looking at is almost identical except for two things.

1) This one has a solid axle and a belt drive.
2) The Spindles/Pullys offset to the right so bars move from left to right.

Can"t help ypu on price, depends a lot on what you need to add/fix to make it workable. My rake used smaller tires, and we ended up buying utility trailer tires. Just note that there was a lot of hay raked with conventional bar rakes before the wheel rakes came into play. Lots of bar rakes still in use, including mine. I really prefer over wheels, as I think they do a cleaner job.

i'm using a old Ford ground driven rake to feed my 851...its 5 bar but 4 should work ok too...you aint gonna set any speed records but will get the job done.
if rakes in that good a shape its prob worth it...prices been all over at auctions...i'd say its worth a little more if you can actually talk to owner before you buy.
