LA is right, get a 7000 you won't regret it, easy to use and simple to empty the seed, i love mine, it will plant all kinds of seeds.

Yes, Deere made a six row in that vintage. I just bought a 1240 four row wide for $75 and plan on taking a row unit and mounting it on the three point. I am actually going to make two, one for my buddy to plant food plots for deer. Mine I am going to use to replant a row if I happen to miss when I do my fields. Figured I could use the press wheel sprocket that drives the insecticide and use it via a jack shaft to drive the finger mechanism.

The 1240 was made in at least two models. One was "plateless" and the other used plates--the same kind that the 490, 495 used. We had a 1240 plate planter for several years--I thought it was one of the finest of its day. Just my opinion.

Ida Red,
That planter is not worth it, no matter how cheap. Meters are a nightmare to repair, plus very hard to clean out leading to internal problems. Look for a JD 7000 with good meters, seed and fert boxes and you will have a top-notch machine. Other things can be easily fixed up.

1240 is a 4 row planter, 1250 is a 6 row, 1280 is an 8 row planter. That was the first JD planter with a "finger pickup", or singulation unit, but not anywhere near as good as the 7000 planter. Step above the 494, 694, etc,. And I could be wrong about calling it a finger pickup or singulation unit, but I think that I am right about referring to it as a "plateless" planter. In between was the 1300 series, with big boxes for seed, fertilizer, herbicide, insecticide, etc. Nice looking, clean lines, but overweight. Poor seller. 7000 revolutionized planting, every other company that survived- copied it. 7000 gauged seed depth at the opener, while prior to that, ALL corn planters gauged it 2-3 feet behind, at the wheel that carried the planter unit.

The 1250 was a "convertible" planter - if you were on wide rows but were thinking of going to 30" rows in the near future, you could purchase it as a 4-row wide and later add the 2 extra units to make it a 6-row 30". There was also a 1260 6-row wide planter in the middle there and a 1290 8-row wide in the last year or two of 1200 series production. The 1300 was made at the same time as the 1200 series. And you are right - it was a cumbersome planter (the brochures show a 4-row being pulled with a 4020 - most other 4-rows at the time could be pulled with a 2520). It was a good idea - central seed and chemical hoppers (kinda like the new CCS planters today?) but didn't go over very well. It was also a convertible planter - 4-row 40", 6-row 30" or 8-row 20".

Think those were pretty good, between the older 494 type, and the newer 7000 series.
