Also, this is the old type that uses a steel 55 gal. drum as a supply tank. Plastic would be better to keep from rusting, but since the steel drum is part of the structure for the top link, it would be a major task to fabricate a frame to hold the plastic drum. Any thoughts?

You want the tank and the plumbing to be compatible with the material being sprayed. The only none plastic in my sprayer plumbing is one stainless steel elbow to a stainless steel pressure gauge and four SS bolts holding the outlet flange on the bottom of the plastic tank.

The pressure regulator that I have has two ports, one for pressure, one for the relieved line that goes to the tank. It could have a third for the pressure gauge. I find a needle valve plumbed in parallel with it adjusts pressure best. Its possible that a pressure regulator could have three ports, in, out, and overflow. I don't have data on that one. A google search on the model number may help.

Your roller pump is a "positive displacement pump", as is the diaphragm pump shown.
