Gehl 3038 Corn Head

We've had Gehl choppers for years. Our first one was an 83(?) Chop-all. Overall, we've been real happy with the choppers. However, one thing that has not performed satisfactorily has been the sickle on the #3038 two row corn heads. We have fiddled with them for years and just have not had good consistant performance. It seems one side or the other frequently just will not cut, resulting in plugging.

Do any of you have any good tips in working with these heads?

The stationary knife has to be sharp and of the correct shape. The rotary knives need to have dead square edges. The vertical surfaces can be ground straight to make square corners on the upper edge where the stalk is drawn into the stationary knife. The stationary knive needs to be adjusted down to the rotary knife so it gets warm when run dry. This is arguably the best design rotary sickle ever, and can be made to run flawlessly with the proper setup and periodic adjustment.

Hi Glenn, I would encourage you to find a helpful
Gehl dealer. There were serv. bulletins concern.
this. I do not have all my bulletins and have
forgotten things, but if set right this head will
work great. We sold NH and Gehl and some issues
were same for both. I believe the shimming was
important on this head. The 3038 was also fully
adjustable between narrow and wide row. Chuck
