Drum vs. disc mower?

I'm thinking about buying a drum or disc mower. I see that drum mowers are a lot cheaper than disc - and since price is ALWAYS an object, I'm leaning towards drum. But what do you think? Are drum mowers any good? What about those CCM drum mowers? I cut grass mix hay, about 5000 bales/year.

And CCM guy, don't respond. Yes, I'm looking at your website, and I'm thinking about purchasing from you. But I don't really want the hard sell right now.

Also meant to add- after cutting with disc mower,we go over it with an old New Holland 404 hay crusher(one metal roller and one rubber roller) This really crushes the stems and saves about 1 day of curing for us.

It does mean more tractor/man hours in the field though but cannot justify discbine type setup. The sickle haybines are probably hard to beat for what they cost now. I do not know how they do if the crop is damp, I know a regular old sickle mower does not do well before about 11 a.m. or so around here

CCM's products seem to be good value for new equipment.

opps,I thought you ment by drum to a reel on a sickel mower,first time I have seen pics of a real drum,sorry.

For us unknowings, what is a drum and what is a disc?

I think a disc type is one which mounts similar to an old sickle bar, out to the side of the tractor and has something like 6 to 9 (depending on cutting width) rotating shafts with a pair of stubby blades on each shaft.....correct?

Have no idea what a drum is unless you are talking about a brush hog type rotary cutter with a stump jumper center section.

Thanks for the pic. I have never seen one. From your notes, that solves one of my main gripes with discs and that is the extensive gearing required and the oil sump which leaks out whenever a crack develops which, on the used ones I've seen, seems to be part of the ball game.

I am running a JD 1209 MOCO now so that's 108" vs 75" on a drum (from what I just read) and I need the conditioning part for my sudan hay. Being retired, time is really not a problem other than wanting to get the hay cut to get the job done and dodging early season thunder storms so maybe width is no biggie. Also the drum might run faster so that the time element would be a wash.

So what about the conditioning?

I cut sudax hay with mine, then run a New Idea (antique) hay conditioner over it, if I am in a hurry to get it in. If not, I just ted it a few times, and let the sun do its work!

The drum mower is probably the most for the money and they have way fewer moving parts than a disc mower. Buying a used disc mower is real risky,they can have lots of expensive problems. I have bought two of them used and had good luck with both. I notice the CCM drum mowers have a maxium cutting width of 75" but even at that, they will mow a lot of hay in a short time. I have used a 65" PZ brand(or whatever it was called) and it did a fine job. A friend has a 65" vicon drum and has only had to replace blades (10-15 min job) in 8-10 years of operation and he is none too easy on equipment.
We have a Vicon CM240 and Long(Fort) 84" disc mower and had good service from both.

I bought one of CCM's drum mowers, I love it. Cuts wet, cuts fast, hay cures well, what more could you ask for 3 grand?

If you are talking small squears,than a drum in very good condition,say maybe a 488NH,if bought reasonable,will be plenty a good machine for 5000 bales.If you have a nice 40hp open station tractor,it won't cost you nearly as much to run.Also they are alot quieter.If you are talking 5000 rounds,well that's a whole nother ball game.That much hay will be cut alot easier with a disk mower.Just be careful how much you pay for a drum,they aren't worth alot now,and will be worth less down the road.pd.

Well I bought a drum mower last spring and I love it. It is an excellent mower so far I have had no problems. It cuts good in all conditions and seems to not require a lot of HP to pull it. Now the only bad thing about the drum mowers is there weight they are heavy so take that into consideration. Anyway I think you will be pleased with either a disc or drum mower.
