Looking at a Massey 450 that is in decent shape with the belts looking decent. My question is everyone says it is a dry hay baler but I have had heard people say that they do not bale worth a snot in second cutting regardless of moisture? Former/current owners enlighten me.

I've had a Vermeer 504C baler for several years. The hay has to be just right, then it will make pretty good bales. Too wet it plugs, to dry it won't feed into the baler.

The 504C is a closed throat baler. The newer open throat balers would be a better choice.

I'm not familiar with the 450. If they were made by Vermeer and were similar to the 605C, it is a closed throat baler. I had one for many years. When the hay, straw, or cornstalk conditions were just right, it was an excellent baler. If the product was too wet, or too dry (this was especially true for cornstalks), the baler was a real frustration. Several small factory modifications helped, but it was not nearly as good a baler as later models. Just my opinion.
