Need to sharpen knives on my JD 346. How hard of a job is this? They are not real bad but seem to need sharpening just a little. Thanks

on ih 440 bailers you could just reach into the bale chamber and remove four nuts from there. i wouldn't put a knife edge on them. real sharp edges will dull real ease, because the metal bends over and breaks off real ease. i'd use a side grinder to do it with and keep a bucket of water and a mop to keep the metal cool with. just sharpen a little bit at a time and water it down and let it cool for a few minutes on its on and then do a little more. don't grind so much of it at a time until it turns blue and black. don't sharpen the back of the blade, but if you keep the grinder real flat you can remove any dings that have swelled the metal on the back side. getting the blade off should be a smiple thing to do or you may have to pull the plunger completely out to get to it, i'm just not sure. while your in there you need to check all the bearing that the plunger rides on. it could be that if the plunger rides on a metal block in the side away from the knife that block may have worn down and letting the top ot the blade pull away from the stationery side of the knives. on ih stuff you could adjst this block to get the correct clearance between the blades again. seem like i could just turn my block over. i think it came with bearings there and they didn't last long so i switched the bearing holder out for one off of an earlier model that had the slide block in it.
