I have about three acres, mostly slight hillside, with trees. We bought in spring, the grass was growing like crazy, and right after making the down payment, etc, a toy lawn and garden tractor with 42" mower was all we could afford. It takes between five and six hours to cover the whole place, depending whether the grass is wet.

Now we have a Super C, popular around here for mowing. I would like to learn some of the pros & cons of belly mounted vs rear drag (tractor has Touch Control system, not Fast Hitch or 3 Pt) mowers for this size tractor, working around trees.

FIRST AS TIM INDICATED YOU NEED TO DETERMINE IF YOU PLAN TO USE THE TRACTOR FOR OTHER APPLICATIONS. BELLY MOWERS ARE MORE MANUVERABL BUT DO NOT COME ON AND OFF EASILY. 3-PT. HITCH MOWERS ARE EASIER TO HOOK AND UNHOOK BUT ARE NOT AS EASY TO GET AROUND LOTS OF TREES. I HAVE USED 5' WOODS BELLY MOWERS ON CUBS FOR YEARS. THE BIG PROBLEM IS CUBS DON'T HAVE ENOUGH H.P. YOUR TRACTOR WOULD HANDLE A 5' MUCH BETTER. HOWEVER THE TREND TODAY IS 3 PT. MOWERS. THESE MOWERS COME IN MANY DIFFERENT SIZES AND TYPES FROM MULCHERS TO AIR TUNNEL MODELS. IT ALL DEPENDS ON HOW OFFEN YOU MOW. I SUGGEST YOU LOOK AT THE BUSH HOG BRAND. THEY OFFER THE MOST COMPLETE LINE, HAVE LOTS OF DEALERS AND PROVIDE GREAT SERVICE. HOPE THIS HELPS YOU OUT.

The belly mower would be most maneuverable, but it's hard to take it off and on if the tractor is needed for other things.

I have a John Deere 507 rotary mower, which is heavier than a finish mower, yet not quite a brush cutter, on a hydraulic wheel carrier. Works great out in an open field, but it's diffcult to work with around trees, especially if you have to do a lot of -turn, back in between two trees, pull out, turn, back in between a tree and fencepost, pull out- type mowing.

I used to use a 6' Woods mower on a Super C. Worked great, had plenty of horsepower and easy to work around trees. Now I use a Cub with a 5' mower that works quite well also.
