Hello everybody.Got a question or 2.I am in the process of replacing drive shaft(the one from the tractor to the tiller). The inner and outter shaft is triangle shape with a flat ridge on one side so it can only fit together one way.Which way do i need to knock the inner shaft to get it to come out the yoke?I removed the roll pin that goes through the yoke and the inner shaft.I also tried to remove the slip clutch and it wouldn't budge,it is splined with a groove cut in the top of the splined shaft so the bolt can slide in(i guess to keep it from moving back and forth) and it looks like when the bolt is being tightened it is also squeezing the clutch on the input shaft on the tiller.I tried soaking both parts with WD40 with no luck. The back of the slip clutch where the bolt goes through is is factory split in it,looks like maybe to spread it open once the bolt is out but i don't know what to use to spread it.I'm scared to hit on it to hard because of the gearbox on the tiller.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well somebody must have put lock tite on the darn thing.Oh "Pinch Bolt",yeah that what it is called.:)I got it off,i used a little of everyone's advice it finally came off.It was tight as all get out.I have to admit though that i did get aggrevated and frailed the you know what out of it and don't you know i missed the chisel and about broke my wrist with the hammer.Still hurting.Again guys. i appreciate your help and your world of knowledge.Oh,and after i got the clutch off,i said the heck with trying to get the inner shaft out of the yoke.I friend of mine had a new whole shaft that we cut a couple inches off on each side. Thanks guys.May god bless each and every one of you.

i don't know where my mind is. can you not unbolt the front half of the slip clutch and get to the u joints that way without having to take it off the drive shaft. you can replace the u joints without taking the slip clutch off. use a small vise that you can carry arround ease to put pressure on the caps to get them off.

the tip heat a little bit is really meant a little bit. spreading with a punch should only be done in very samll licks and then more pulling. if you have a big gear puller i'd put it on and put a little tension on it. continue with the pecking, not knocking, on the piece. apply a liitle heat if all else fails. once you get it to move, spray with wd-40 and drive back on. keep driving it on and off. driving if off will allow the crud to fall of and not just keep piling up in between the two pieces. use a punch and don't hit the drive shaft. also use emory cloth to clean the shaft in the direction your going before you start trying to drive it off. a goos cleaning and some anti sieze on all mating parts will help for future tear downs. send us a list on new words you learn while doing this.

sounds like same style slip clutch as on my shredder...remove the pinch bolt completely...sometimes a big heavy screwdriver can be inserted in pinch slot and twisted with a cresent wrench to get a lil clearance...or if you got a blunt chisel you can tap into slot to spread it...wont take much unless somebody put Loctite on splines...if all else fails heat the clutch collar with splines and TAP it with a hammer.
