I am a newbie & I recently came across a good deal on a 3 pt pto posthole digger. Went to hook up to the tractor & the telescoping shaft will not extend out. Any tips on freeing it up?

Now that you have it apart, get yourself a tube or bottle of Never Seize. Also known as slip plate, it is a kind of silvery looking greasy substance, that sticks very well to metal, and keeps the 2 halves from rusting together, even if you leave it outside.

the easiest way to keep them from sticking is one store equiptment inside. two remove the drive shaft front half and put it under lock and key. next time it just a matter of a little oil and your good to go. keeping it under lock and key will keep down theft too.

Ditto what josh said.. clean the outside of the inner shaft and polish any rust off with a wire cup.. or emory cloth.. then clean up the inner bore as much as possible.. if the yoke end is hollow, ramrod some rags thru there soaked with petro-based solvent..

Apply a liberal coat of grease and slide back together..

Clean it up, and use good thick grease as others say. WD40 or other light lubes will evaporate & it will rust up again. No good.

Chck it for twist, as mentioned. No easy fix for that - have to replace.

Went out to the barn tonight & played around with it. Put some WD40 on it & let sit for a while. Tapped on it with a hammer & it popped loose. Now that it is freed up, do I need to clean off the WD40 & coat it with automatic transmission fluid or some other lubricant to keep it free?

Now that you have it apart, I would clean it up with a wire brush and some WD-40 to get all the dried grease, dirt and other stuff off of it. Then put a good layer of grease on it and slide it back on. There should be a grease fitting on the side of the shaft (somewhere near the middle) that you can use to keep it lubed up. You don't have to grease it every time you grease the u-joints, but make sure it gets done regularly.

ahhhhh ...the good deal...sight down driveline and look for a slight twist...chances are the shaft is bent or twisted from auger snagging on a rock/root.
if you luck out and shaft is just rusted tight tip shaft up so you can pour trans fluid between inner and outer shafts...let sit for a day or 3 and start tapping both directions on shaft...may take awhile but eventually it'll move...just dont get too heavy handed or you'll be dropping close to $200. bux for a replacement.
