OK. There is a local guy who has a MF 31 mower for sale at a good price. I've been told they are a good mower. Right now, it has Cat 2 pins on it. Will a 40 HP Cat 1 tractor run this mower? Also, anyone have any good photos of one so I can make sure it is all there?
Thanks!

Those old MF31 mowers were made to operate with small HP tractors like 30's and 35's. I've mowed a million acres(justed seemed like it) with one hooked behind a 1955 MF50 and my Dad had one he mowed with for years behind a MF 40. The beauty of a sickle mower is that they take so little HP compared to a disc or drum mower. Plus you can work on one with fairly primative tools. The big time high speed farmers are in love with disc mowers but the little guy can cut a lot of hay with a well tuned and adjusted sickle mower. As for you question about mowing below horizontal, I think there is an adjustable link that lets you drop the bar below horizontal, but remember that you can not pick it up off the ground when it is set that way. I converted a Cat 1 to Cat 2 in 15 minutes with a big crescent wrench and a sledge hammer...the steps are the same in reverse---2 back to 1. Bet it came with cat 1 when new.

How long is the bar on it?? I had a MF 35 I think that was 7 foot and an 8N would work it just fine so a 40HP tractor should play with it even if its a 9 footer. One thing to make sure of is that the brake away works right on it or it can become a piece of scrap iron fast it you goof one time. BTDT and found that out the hard way when I broke a part on the one I had and to replace the part cost more then the mower did so I sold it cheap
