I bought an old 14T this fall, and have spent the winter trying to figure it out. Never owned a baler before, just picked up the bales they dropped and threw them on the wagon when I was a kid (a long time ago!). Anyway, I got a parts manual and an operators manual and went over them front to back. It wouldn"t trip the knotter, and I discovered the Trip Dog spring was missing. Here"s my delema: The nearest dealer is over an hour away and I can"t find the part on the internet. Is there somewhere out there that has the parts I need On Line? I can"t believe there isn"t one. I also need some help figuring out how to replace it. I tried to remove the shaft, but it won"t budge. I probably missed removing a pin or something, but I don"t see it in the parts book. It wasn"t much help showing how it"s put together (the spring that is). Either that or it"s rusted onto the knotter assembly. I didn"t want to pound on it and break something else! There must be more than the two cotter pins holding it in place. Any help is appreciated. As time permits, I"ll post pics to the URL below.

Well, I found, ordered, and installed the trip dog spring and tucker finger spring. I also found a new Yoke, that was nice! I ran it thru a couple of cycles by hand and it tripped every time! Then I got brave and attached it to the tractor. It worked! Every time I tripped it, it reacted. NOW, I shut it down of course, threaded the needles and fired it back up. Broke open half a dozen bales and started feeding it. The first bale tied perfectly. From then on, it was a disaster! First the right side would tie, and the left would jamb up. Cleared that and then the left would tie and the right would miss and twist the twine on the billhook. Seems most of the trouble is on the right knotter, it missed nearly every bale. I looked in the manual, and it"s doing almost everything listed in the knotter trouble section! I have no idea where to start. I"m thinking Billhook tension... Any suggestions??? Where should I start, and go from here?

Well, I got the springs replaced. The trip dog works fine now. But, the tucker fingers don"t want to return home. Everything seems loose enough, and I got a new spring (from JD). Any advice on that?

You really don't want to move that shaft. I had one apart 30 years ago, shaft was broke!! Anyway, unbolt the whole knotter assembly (frame) and go at it from the other side. Anyway that is what I ended up doing. Those shim and slide nadjusting washers are a pain. Had to beat the broke shaft every 1/32 of a inch off. All day job.

I appreciate that advice Ernie! I'll pull the whole assembly and go at it from that direction.

Try to find a similar size spring at a hardware store or try Fastenal.

Thanks John, I"d thought about that, but I don"t know what length, tension, diameter etc... to buy. I wish JD had a better parts section on their web site. I do have the part number at least.

I would not worry too much (within reason) about how much spring pressure, enough to work and not too much to break. We would break springs and wire 'em up to finish baling to beat the rain.
