66 baler - looking for PTO shaft

I have a 66 baler with working Wisconsin engine, but it is a bear to start, especially when warm. I"d like to add the PTO shaft to act as a starter and as a backup to the engine.

Anyone have an old 66 PTO shaft they are willing to part with?

Matt,

The PTO shafts off of any older NH baler will bolt directly right up. I took mine off of a NH 282. Every thing bolted exactly. It took me longer to take the pto off of the 282 than it did to put it on the 66. The clutches are already on that style of PTO so no modifications are needed except if your had the jack on the 66 tongue, the support for the shaft bolts right though that hole in the tongue. I ran into starting problems with mine and resorted to stealing the pto off of a 282 that I bought for $50... My only problem now is that I loaned it out to a friend last year who managed to get it out of time, and broke the needles off. So off I go parts searching again! I may still have another baler at the high school that I loaned them to restore as a class project, but I think that the instructor got tired of looking at it sitting outside of the shop and scrapped it (the kids never completed it). I really hope not. I really like that model of baler, was hoping to have a second operating ones just in case.
Thanks
Glen

I can relate to a warm Wisconsin being hard to start. I worked with a VE4 on a Case A6 combine. However, if your tractor has a PTO brake, I would think that that system would give trouble. Also, the PTO shaft would be rotating when you were getting on and off the tractor, from a safety standpoint. Just my 2 cents worth.

I've never noticed a PTO brake on my tractor, but I plan to work in an over-running clutch somewhere, preferably close to the flywheel to allow the shaft to spin down. I may replace the actual shafts with modern ones with safety shrouds. The flywheel appears to be identical to the super 66 with the PTO, i.e. it has 3 tapped holes on the flywheel.

If anybody has ideas on how to make the wisconsin engine easier to start (source for starter motor or even adding a crank or pull cord) I'm open to suggestions. The baler works great, but I fear being stuck mid field with a hot engine that I can't restart.

I would think the shaft off a just about any NH baler would work. The only catch is bolting the slip clutch to the flywheel. Find an old 68 or something like that with a shaft. It should work.

Troy, I'm Really needing the needles, for one of them and the belt pulley off of the engine for the other one would be nice. The High school lost it. I dont know even why they took it off but I wanted them to just pull the motor off so that I could make it a pto drive baler. Now I cant even get the instructor to call me back and tell me if he hauled that one off or where it is. I drove by the school the other day and didnt see it. Which really urks me, because I gave them all of the materials to restore it, i.e. all new pick up teeth, chains, sprockets, oak and pattern for the packer board, needles, patterns for the missing guards and steel to make them, tires, paint etc, plus a $250 donation to the chapter for doing the project. I know that the 2 students that were doing the majority of the project graduated last year. Could you send me picts? Is there enough there to make one out of the 2 if my other baler dissappeared? If you got good needles I'd really be interested. Atleast I could be able to be up an running for this summer. NH still sells the needles but I had a heart attack over the price, not to mention that they are a month out, and I would have to drive 160 miles to Billings just to pick them up.
Thanks Glen
